TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Defendants in two federal lawsuits challenging Florida’s marriage ban filed a notice Thursday that they are appealing the August 21 ruling by U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle overturning Florida’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Ind. AG to ask U.S. Supreme Court to stay same-sex marriage ruling

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to stay a 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals' ruling that found the state's gay marriage ban unconstitutional. Attorney General Greg Zoeller said Thursday that it seems clear the issue will have to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. Zoeller says his office will seek a stay while it appeals the decision.

Dillon, Mont., rejects motion to consider non-discrimination ordinance

DILLON, Mont. -- The city council in Dillon, Mont., on Wednesday voted not to move forward on a proposed ordinance to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The council voted 6-2 against a motion to consider the ordinance, but instead asked the the city attorney to draft a resolution making it known that the city of Dillon does not support discrimination.

Staten Island St. Pats parade organizers to weigh gay group participation

NEW YORK -- Organizers of the St. Patrick's Day parade on Staten Island have yet to decide whether gay groups will be allowed to march under their own banners. The president of the local Hibernians, Marty Crimmins, tells the Staten Island Advancethat the issue will likely be discussed at a meeting in October or November.

Wis. AG says he will appeal same-sex marriage ruling to U.S. Supreme Court

MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin's attorney general says he will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a federal appellate ruling striking down the state's same-sex marriage ban. Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen's spokeswoman, Dana Brueck, said in an email to The Associated Press that Van Hollen has always believed the case will be decided in the that court.

CHICAGO -- A U.S. appeals court ruled Thursday that same-sex marriage bans in Wisconsin and Indiana violate the U.S. Constitution, in another in a series of courtroom wins for marriage equality advocates. The unanimous decision by the three-judge panel of the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago bumps the number of states where gay marriage could be legal from 19 to 21.
