On any given night, the atmosphere at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport’s Terminal 4, one of the largest of the international arrivals halls, is chaotic. But after President Donald Trump issued an abusive new immigration Executive Order on January 27, JFK’s ordinary bustle was joined by crowds of protesters and a surge of security federal and state law enforcement personnel. Also on the scene: an army of more than 40 immigration attorneys, interpreters, and volunteers were working on laptops and smartphones, preparing court filings challenging the detention of non-citizens detained inside the terminal’s pre-entry area.
Bangladesh has signed up to two international human rights conventions which define child marriage as being wed before the age of 18, and demand that the country end the practice. But then so has the UK—and that hasn’t stopped it violating these same commitments either.
As fighting has flared up between government forces and Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine over these past two days, we have spoken to people trapped on both sides of the line of contact.
