Stop the deportation of Lazia
to Uganda!

Dear friends,
Despite being a lesbian, Lazia was forced into marrying a man, due to pressure from her family in Uganda. Last year, Lazia’s husband found her kissing her girlfriend, and brutally beat her, leaving her unconscious. Lazia fled to the UK where she applied for asylum. But, the Home Office has refused her application, rejecting her statement that she fears for her safety, despite carrying scars from her assault. Sign the petition to say that you believe her.
Same-sex sexual acts were first made illegal in Uganda by British colonial rulers in the 19th century, and lesbians have faced imprisonment there since 2000. Our Government is meant to protect people who arrive in the UK after fleeing human rights abuses in their home country. But it is threatening to deport Lazia to Uganda where she would face terrible homophobia, violence and even imprisonment. Sign the petition to demand she be allowed to stay in the UK.
Activists from Out and Proud African LGBTI are campaigning for Lazia to be released from the detention centre where she is currently imprisoned. They say, "Lazia is a Ugandan lesbian who has been active in the LGBTI community in the UK, both on behalf of Rainbows Across Borders and Out and Proud African LGBTI. She is much loved and respected in our community, and we reject any suggestion that she is somehow not a genuine lesbian. Lazia has a visible online presence, and gay haters in Uganda will identify her. We fear for her safety if she is sent back to Uganda."
Thank you,

 Beth G.
