This work, although old, is precious: it tells us the history of the extreme

right in France from the Liberation until the years 2008. The extreme right : theplural signifies the first project of this book, which aims to show that to speakof the extreme right in the singular is inaccurate, the reality being in no wayunique and homogeneous. Once the phenomenon has been circumscribed, the authorretraces the paths of these movements, their contradictions and internalheartbreaks. ---- The extreme right form an indeterminate, incoherent, difficultto define whole. There are many differences between fundamentalist Catholics andmilitants claiming pagan cults, between monarchists, regionalists, Bonapartists, supporters of a strong state, fascists and those nostalgic for the Third Reich. These numerous ideological oppositions should irremediably separate its membersand this happened regularly internally, but the fact remains that their ideas arestrongly inscribed in the political landscape. This is perhaps the mostformidable thing: the trivialization of a body of detestable ideas.Starting from the period of the purge after the Liberation, the author travelsthrough the years 1944-1968, where the Algerian war is fully present and servesas a core and ferment for new organizations. Then, between 1969 and 1974, it wasthe time of ideological reconstruction, marked by violent activism. The splitsfollow one another in a climate of violence, external and internal. The years1974-2008 are very important in the process of unification of the extreme right. This is the moment of the rise of the National Front, which consecrates itscentral place. "Since 1973, the splits, the recompositions have been made withreference to the FN, which has played a dual role of attraction and repulsion.»The analysis of the links between the parliamentary right and the extreme rightshows that the porosity of the right to extreme right ideas is nothing new. Thequestion of the relevance of being part of electoral logics for anti-democraticparties and denouncing parliamentarianism regularly resurfaces within theseformations. This book, illustrated with various propaganda posters and fanzine covers, invites you on a strange and sordid journey through the nauseous meanders ofthese worlds. By following the convulsions of the self-proclaimed leaders whomake and break the small groups that compose them, insulting each other andreviling their former companions, the book allows us to avoid a certain number oferrors due to approximations and semantic confusions. The abundance of acronymssometimes obscures understanding, but following all of these movements with theircompositions, decompositions, recompositions is not easy work.Dominique Sureau (UCL Angers)Jean-Paul Gautier, The far-rights in France, from 1945 to the present day,Syllepse editions, March 2017, 528 pages, 25 euros.https://www.unioncommunistelibertaire.org/?Lire-Gautier-Les-extremes-droites-en-France-de-1945-a-nos-jours_________________________________________A - I N F O S  N E W S  S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.ca
