The people who inhabit the Yanomami Indigenous Land, in the region of Roraima,
have been suffering from the violence of illegal mining in recent months. Evenwith the land demarcated and approved 30 years ago, the territory was invaded byprospectors in search of gold and cassiterite, under the connivance and evenencouragement of the State.Last year, the devastation of indigenous land by illegal mining grew 46% comparedto the previous year, advancing on the plantations of the Yanomami, destroyingtheir livelihoods. It is estimated that more than 16,000 indigenous people wereaffected. The invasion also affects the health of the Yanomami people, with asignificant increase in cases of malaria and child malnutrition.The garimpeiros entice indigenous teenagers and young people to work for them,which involves harassment and sexual abuse of women and children, who areintoxicated with alcoholic beverages. Last month, a 12-year-old indigenous womandied after being raped by miners, and an indigenous child drowned after beingthrown into the river with a woman in an attempted kidnapping.According to the Pastoral Land Commission, 101 indigenous people died in theYanomami Indigenous Land last year alone, as a result of conflicts with illegalmining, a scenario described by leaders as genocide.To denounce this situation, demonstrations are being held throughout Brazil bypopular movements.
