A particularly bold action has taken place in Roberval in recent days in a
context marked by the social tensions that had been described in a previousarticle. Since an affordable housing project for Aboriginals was put on hold, after more than two years of waiting and for lack of sufficient funding from theSociété d'Habitation du Québec (SHQ), the Center Mamik du Lac -Saint-Jeanorganized a camp on the project site to help homeless Aboriginal people in thecity. Composed of two large tents equipped with mattresses installed on the firtree, the camp accommodated and fed for five days more than a dozen people from18 to 75 years old. Large posters were installed to claim the right to housingfor Aboriginal people. Very soon, the camp was declared illegal by the cityauthorities. Activities such as a corn roast and a drumming group took place onsite. A few groups, including the Collective of Immigrant Women ofSaguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, also came to lend their support. After a tolerance of two days at the start, the action bent the mayor who had toconcede that there were no resources for homeless people at night in Roberval andthat it was a real need. Through the voice of its spokesperson, the Mamik Centershowed itself ready to continue camping beyond these two days, and even if athreat of eviction were to hover, as long as it did not gain of cause. Thisdetermination got the better of the authorities, whose municipal council finallydecided, before the start of a new week, that the camp would be tolerated for afew additional days for humanitarian reasons. The camp ended after receivingpositive signals from the SHQ for the release of the file.Direct action brings gains and we can bet that institutions such as theSecretariat of Aboriginal Affairs, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housingand the Ministry of Health and Social Services (to which the Mamik Center hadpreviously reaching requests in vain) will be more attentive to the needsexpressed in the future. The construction of the project is an emergency with thewinter coming. "Anyone who has thought, even once in his life, of having to reaffirm a right, and who, alone or with others, mustered his courage in both hands to do so, haspracticed the action direct". - Voltairine de Cleyre, On direct action, 1912.An anarchist from PekuakamiPosted 20 hours ago by Collectif Emma Goldman http://ucl-saguenay.blogspot.com/2022/09/roberval-une-lutte-victorieuse-pour.html_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
