In Roberval, the fire at the Georges-Henri Lévesque library on August 24 provoked
many reactions. A regional newspaper, L'Etoile du Lac, speaks of an increase inthe feeling of insecurity in the area. The fire started following two fires ofgarbage cans probably lit in a voluntary way in front of the library and thePlaza Roberval, an adjacent shopping center. Another suspicious fire in the sametown made headlines the next day, this time in a derelict building waiting to bedemolished. Suspicions were then turned towards a "squatter" who may haveaccidentally started the fire. While these two incidents strongly testify to themisery and social problems that plague the community, in the authoritarianworldview, the culprit is found, it is the poor, and the expected response iseven more police and monitoring.Meaningful statistics do not exist, but homelessness and poverty have been morevisible in Roberval for a number of years. Some elements of the situation such asthe arrival of prison and a shortage of affordable housing could be pointed out,but the problem is much deeper. It originates in the widening chasm thatseparates the social classes and the different communities of the sector. Theinsecurity that the regional press talks about is actually the fear of the poor, those people they would prefer to see less visible, incarcerated, institutionalized or moved elsewhere, because the poor disturb the tranquility ofbusinesses, condominiums and tourists. Thinking of solving the social problem ofpoverty by increasing social control and increasing the judicial system isfoolishness. It means doing even more harm to the most vulnerable and furtherdestroying the social solidarity that is so sorely lacking. Meanwhile, we learnedthis week that, despite all the efforts of the Mamik Center of Lac-Saint-Jean inthe direction of the realization of a project of 24 housing units intended forAboriginal families in Roberval, the project is still awaiting adequate fundingfrom the Société d'Habitation du Québec. In doing so, it is a temporary camp thatwill soon be erected on the land of the housing project.Mutual aid and solidarity are the necessary bases for the development of strong, inclusive and anti-racist communities. Class society and its world do just theopposite to spread distrust and predation. L'Etoile du Lac shared this week theslanders of condominium owners in downtown Roberval about a homeowner theyallowed themselves to diagnose with Diogenes syndrome. It goes a long way whenit's published in a newspaper. They demanded purely and simply an eviction of thelady when she is the owner and has no connection with the fires. In anotherarticle, tradeswomen affected by the fire indicated that the circulation of poorand itinerant people in the street made them feel in danger. To read this leaf ofcabbage, it is quite a drama for people in means to have to live with a populardistrict. An anarchist from Pekuakami by Emma Goldman Collectivehttp://ucl-saguenay.blogspot.com/2022/09/roberval-plus-de-flics-alors-que-les.html_________________________________________A - I N F O S N E W S S E R V I C EBy, For, and About AnarchistsSend news reports to A-infos-en mailing listA-infos-en@ainfos.caSPREAD THE INFORMATION
