Everyone has seen it, week after week, month after month, the price of thegrocery basket continues to rise. It is becoming difficult to feed ourselves andmore of our starvation wages are spent on this essential need. During thiselection period, the political class sensed a good deal by promising us checksfor several hundred dollars or even tax breaks in order to obtain our votes. Butit's not new that people have to choose between paying their rent and buyinggroceries. It is not yesterday that people are struggling to balance theirfinances. It is not yesterday that the end of the month causes hives. The partythat formed the government wants us to continue like this. Where were thesepoliticians during the last four years?We don't want to pull our heads above water until the system pushes us back downto drowning. At the moment, we are producing plenty of food and basic necessitiesto largely meet the needs of people all over the planet. However, thisproduction, in a capitalist system, is distributed unequally, which means thatthe poor have misery or are not able to feed themselves adequately and to theirhunger. Thus, huge quantities of food are thrown away every day while more andmore people have to line up in front of food banks to hope to have something toeat in the days to come. To add insult to injury, our grocery bills areconstantly increasing, as are the profits of the big food banners. Obviously, thetop managers of these companies never think of cutting their profits. The bill ispassed on to "consumers", that's how it is, that's life... Well, we say enough isenough! We want to bring down this system of production and distribution whichkeeps us in poverty and which threatens all forms of life on Earth.But beyond the complaints and denunciations of capitalism: "we must start fromour insubordination, create breaches, reverse the course of things" writes thephilosopher and sociologist John Holloway.It is by forming community, by weaving links from below, by our struggles and bylooking for ways to do things without asking permission from the institutionsthat we can truly improve our situation. Solidarity, mutual aid,self-organization and direct actions are not simple slogans to be written onbanners.
