Did you know that child marriage is still legal in 43 US states?
How about that no state has banned all corporal punishment of children?
Or that the US remains the only country in the world that sentences children under 18 to life in prison without parole?
United States state laws overwhelmingly fail to meet international child rights standards or protect children.
We graded states on laws concerning categories ranging from child marriage to child labor, and put together an interactive scorecard. Here are some of our findings. |
Over a quarter million children, some as young as 10, were reportedly married in the US between 2000 and 2018.
Not a single state prohibited child marriage until 2018, when Delaware became the first to outlaw the practice. Massachusetts became just the seventh state to do so this year, setting the minimum marriage age to 18, with no exceptions.
Research shows that child marriage is associated with early pregnancy, lower educational achievement, and increased risk of domestic violence and poverty. |
|
In twenty-three states, both public and private schools still allow corporal punishment of children, which has been found to be both ineffective in correcting children’s behavior and harmful to child development.
Black children and children with disabilities are significantly more likely to experience corporal punishment in schools. |

After looking at laws in all 50 states and compiling this scorecard, what we found boils down to this:
For those who believe the US is treating its children well, this assessment is a rude awakening.
