mere periphery. So say the strategists of geopolitics. From the visit of the
president of the US chamber, Nancy Pelosi, to Taipei, to the continuous Chinese
military exercises around the island, to the resentful declarations of protection
of freedom and integrity on both sides, there is a proliferation of positions
that seem wanting to precipitate the situation at any moment. In short, the
pattern that led to the war in Ukraine is repeated, in which the parties, rather
than dialogue, as in the statutes of contemporary states should happen, launch
mutual accusations and take such rigid positions as not to leave (from their
point of view) space to any mediation. Thus the war served. But what would
eventually open up between the US and China would not be one of the many wars
that have been fought in recent decades and are being fought, it would be by
definition a world war. War that apparently many believe can be fought without
atomic risk. Meanwhile, whether we are near or far from a precipice that should
make us react and work with all our strength to prevent it, propaganda is in
action to build, through the media, a narrative that makes war and armies appear
something necessary. and unavoidable.
End of peaceand the end of the story are the two theories, axioms that do not
need proof, to which politicians, commentators and scholars resort to to convince
us that the world goes a certain way and that there are no realistic and
practicable alternatives. The end of peace seems to have fallen upon us with the
war in Ukraine. We, guilty and guilty, had basked in more than seventy years of
peace, since the end of the Second World War, and we did not realize that others
- Putin in this case - were equipping themselves to reduce us to slavery. The
awakening has plunged us into anguish, but the governments have been able to
react, even if for the most accredited commentators they are still not doing
enough, sending weapons to Ukraine, increasing military spending and
strengthening the armies. This is one of the most popular readings, credited as
an indisputable truth, while just a quick glance at what has happened since the
end of World War II tells us exactly the opposite. That war has continued to be
one of the privileged tools that States use to pursue their objectives of
domination, on a large or small scale, internally as well as in international
relations. Eduardo Galeano in 1998 wrote that in what was defined the era of
peace, from 1945 onwards, the war had produced twenty-two million deaths!

The other theory in vogue, the end of the story, which already has a few decades
behind it, is perhaps more subtle and works the other way around. While peace -
non-existent as we have seen - is smuggled for real, the end of history is a true
illusion. The end of history would be the idea that conflicts cease to exist -
end of the Cold War in this specific case - and humanity can live in peace. Now,
since history cannot be stopped, and thinking it is an illusion, it follows that
war or rather the possibility of war cannot be canceled, for this we need armies
and war apparatuses. This is the harsh reality to which we must submit. History
then equal war, equal power, equal domination. Who can oppose history, the
passage of time? Nobody is so self-evident. But history thus turns into necessity,

End of peace and end of history, like a fake puzzle game, are the vice in which
they lock us in to justify states, war and power. Getting out of this mental and
ideological cage will be a first step to be able to make war an abomination, to
be ousted from history.
