About half a year ago, the first protest initiative against the increasing
inflation and the resulting deterioration in our living conditions was formed inDortmund with "Gemeinsam gegen Preishöhen". A lot has happened since then, and weas a group have also played an active role in some of them. We are taking this asan opportunity to look back on the previous protests against the crisis inDortmund, but also to show how things can continue in our city in the comingmonths. ---- In fact, the "story" of the protest against the price increases inDortmund begins on April 22, 2022, when a rally under the motto "Down with thefuel and heating costs!" had called. This rally was only very poorly attended, but was probably one of the first public protests against the price increases inGermany. It was not until July that a small group of people from the climate meetingdecided to set up an initiative against the crisis. This then started at the endof August as Together against price increases and held the first meetings. At the same time, the Alliance Enough is Enough formed another force in thecrisis protest, which gathered parties, trade unions and political initiatives. The first rally of the alliance took place at the beginning of October, which wasable to generate at least attention with almost 150 people. However, the weekly rallies became smaller and smaller. Therefore, togetheragainst price increases, based on the model of similar approaches in Bremen, itwas decided to take the protest to the districts. The first district rally in theUnionviertel was announced for November and soon there were daily talks withneighbors in the district. The rally was the starting point for a permanent neighborhood organization in thewest of Dortmund, which is currently taking shape with regular neighborhoodmeetings, presence in the district and also through the construction of the newneighborhood space Union Salon.A few things also happened away from the Union Quarter. Enough is enoughorganized in this way two, unfortunately very small, demonstrations and a rally.Overall, however, it can be said that the crisis protests in Dortmund remainweak. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the left hardly gets beyondits usual and ineffective forms of action, but also because many left-wing groupssee no reason at all to take part in such protests. It is all the more gratifying that the existing approaches continue to develop.Enough is enough prepares for the support and connection of company struggles andTogether against price increases is in the process of bringing the neighborhoodorganization to the north town as well. It remains to be seen whether the rest ofthe social left will overcome its distance from the crisis protest. As Platform Ruhr, we have been intensively involved in the crisis protests inrecent months and have advocated organizing in the neighborhoods because weconsider the emergence of neighborhood organization to be an important steptowards building countervailing power. We will continue to advocate thisperspective, but we will also support future labor disputes in companies.
