The Esperança Community, made up of more than 500 families who built their homes
with their own hands and collective effort in Osasco (SP), suffers a seriousthreat of repossession that has been running in court for over 10 years. A fewweeks ago, the community had to face a new request for eviction made by thePublic Ministry, which, if carried out, would turn into a social tragedy. ----The issue of housing, which is the basis of survival and a dignified life, affects many other fields. Without proof of residence, for example, it is verydifficult to access any other social right. Land conflicts result in forcedevictions and removals of people from their place of residence and survival. Itis a chronic and invisible problem in Brazil, a country that has many peoplewithout homes, and many homes without people: countless properties and land thatdo not fulfill the social function of public and private property.Between August 2020 and May 2022, the number of families evicted in Brazilincreased by 393%, according to a survey by the Campaign Zero Eviction. Accordingto data from the "National Mapping of Conflicts for Land and Housing", releasedin February 2023, more than 40,000 families have undergone eviction orrepossession processes since the beginning of the pandemic, and 217,881 familieshave experienced some type of threat to leave the places where they live. Thesituation affects more than 1 million people in all regions of the country (66%are black people, and 60% are women). In the state of São Paulo alone, there are318 conflicts mapped, including threats, partial removal and total removal, and44 cases of temporary suspension. The data reach the observatories throughdenouncements, so they may be undersized.Ocupação Esperança fights for concrete steps to be taken towards the community'sland tenure regularization. In this, he denounces the omission of the mayor ofOsasco, Rogério Lins, who does not keep his promise and puts the lives of so manypeople at risk.
