In the past two weeks, the large-scale military maneuver "Air Defender 23" took
place over Germany and some neighboring European countries. ---- Under theleadership of the German Air Force, more than 200 aircraft from various NATOcountries and their allies were used in several exercise zones in northern,southern and eastern Germany. This is the largest air war maneuver in the historyof NATO. Around 100 combat aircraft were transferred to Germany from the USAalone. ---- According to the Bundeswehr, the aim of this exercise was to trainthe rapid and coordinated intervention of the air force and to publiclydemonstrate NATO's air power. In addition, the German Air Force wanted to provethat they can carry out such a large-scale exercise.Just one building block of militarization"Air Defender" thus follows a series of similar European NATO maneuvers in recentyears. Their goal is to increase the coordinated military capabilities of Westernstates, demonstrate strength against the main imperialist rivals Russia andChina, while normalizing the increasing presence and build-up of armed forces tothe population. The start of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine last year hasincreased the relevance of all these goals for NATO countries.That is why most western countries are currently arming themselves massively.Preparations are being made for a possible direct confrontation with Russia. Itis not for nothing that the fictional scenario in front of which "Air Defender"takes place is an attack on German territory from the east. For Germanimperialism, all of this is also an opportunity to demonstrate its militarycompetence.Rearmament and preparations for war are being accompanied by an all-encompassingwave of militaristic and imperialist propaganda to nip any opposition to thesepolicies in the bud. From militaristic propaganda in the bourgeois media tolarge-scale advertising campaigns by the Bundeswehr to discussions about a newconscription: militarization is increasing.Stabbing your own imperialism in the backEven if bourgeois propaganda would have us believe it: NATO fighter jets overheadare not in our interest - even if you disregard the millions in costs for thismaneuver and the massive environmental impact. The militarization of westernsocieties and the rearmament of their armies serves the sole purpose of securingthe necessary "competitive advantage" for western states and their nationalcapital over their competitors Russia or China in the current and futureimperialist conflicts. We pay the price for wage earners on all sides of theborders, who are sent into tanks and trenches by the rulers.We therefore refuse - as the rulers and their press demand of us - to side with"our" imperialism. Instead, we must put up resolute resistance to rearmament andmilitarization - at all levels of society.In the schools, by showing the junior officers of the Bundeswehr what we thinkabout throwing our lives away for the profits of German capital.In the universities, by raising our voices against research into new warfareagents and weapons of murder.In the neighborhoods, by not leaving the Bundeswehr's poster campaigns and basesuncommented.In the factories, by talking to our colleagues about rearmament plans andblocking components of military production.And of course also as an anti-militarist movement in front of the gates of theweapon manufacturers and war profiteers, by taking those who also earn money fromthe imperialist war out of cover and disturbing them.Only if we wage earners around the world unite and stab our own imperialism inthe back will we be able to stop the wars and war preparations of the rulers.
