Like every year, the trans community counts its deaths. It lists 392between October 1, 2022 and September 30, 2023. A number largelyunderestimated due to the low media coverage of the victims, while thelevel of hatred and violence has skyrocketed this year. Our rights, fortheir part, are still largely insufficient, are in decline andthreatened in many countries. ---- United States: Tiffany Banks, 25,shot dead. For several years, an extremely violent attack has beentaking place against trans people and their rights. Orchestrated byreactionary or even fascist movements, it suddenly accelerated in 2023in many countries, on the legislative scene but also in the media. Transpeople are portrayed as dangerous for children or for women, using thehackneyed and false cliché linking LGBTI people and sexual attackers.United Kingdom: Brianna Ghey, 16, stabbed after years of transphobicharassment. Many of the trans people murdered this year are directvictims of the hateful climate that results from these attacks. UnitedStates, United Kingdom, Russia, Hungary... These deadly policies aretoday imported to France by the Republicans, the National Rally and EricZemmour. It is imperative to oppose it to prevent new tragedies.Iraq: Noor Alsaffar, 23, murdered for her presence on social networks.Reactionaries aren't just targeting trans people. It is a strategy, on asubject little known to the general public, to accustom people to bodycontrol. Their political project is dangerous for all LGBTI people aswell as for women. These are the same people who fought the right toabortion, which they brought down in the United States last year.Italy: Marta Castaña Torres, 65, Colombian immigrant, prostitute due topoverty, killed with other women by a client. Meanwhile, the situationremains critical for the trans population. Subjected to discriminationand persecution, the vast majority suffer from poverty and isolation.Within this, the most vulnerable people are trans women (94% ofmurders), affected by racism (80% of murders), often undocumented (45%of murders in Europe). Access to care, administrative procedures, oreven simply to public space is far from guaranteed.Sweden: Molly, 14, took her own life following a traumatic puberty,while waiting for treatment for 18 months. With rare exceptions, accessto medical transition is very difficult throughout the world,particularly for minors. Pretending to protect children, policies inreality create deadly distress. 80% of trans people suffer fromdepression, one in two will attempt suicide in their life, even thoughit has been proven that transition treatments are extremely effectivefor their mental health. But these victims are not in the newspapers:they represent only 15% of the deaths recorded this year, even thoughthey are probably the main external cause of death. This November 20,let us be numerous to commemorate the victims of transphobia, duringrallies organized throughout France. Let's say their names, let's telltheir stories, let's break the silence.
