Until 2014, the À Contre-Courant newsletter had a partnership withAlternative libertaire. Each newspaper published the other's editorials.Almost ten years after the end of ACC, Bernard Schaeffer, its kingpin,has just disappeared. His comrades greet him. ---- We have the sad andpainful task of announcing to you the death of our friend and comradeBernard Schaeffer, which occurred on October 28, 2023. ---- We met atthe dawn of the 1980s as part of the CFDT regional union of Alsace. Wethen opposed the "refocusing" of the confederation. In short: to itsright-wing, in a context where, on the left, the era of renunciations,cowardice and betrayals was beginning. We were among those determinednot to give up our weapons and to continue the fight.A few years later were born, firstly Rénouveau syndical 68 then ÀContre-Courant. During the twenty-five years of this collectiveenterprise, Bernard was one of its linchpins, in more than one way. Itwas at his house that we gathered, around a table generously furnishedby him. He was the editorial secretary, pushing us to write the articlesand organizing the bulletin; but also the secretary in general,responding to the mail we received, managing the subscriber file withLouis Dalstein and ensuring the routing of the newsletter; whileassisting Annette and Daniel Walter in assembling the newsletter, thelatter having also left us last year.Disciplinary transfer from Wittenheim to MulhouseIn all these collective tasks, Bernard showed a constant good humortowards us which contrasted with the anger which seized him at timeswhen he spoke of the thousand and one situations of oppression againstwhich we protested. What was perhaps most remarkable was hisdetermination in the struggles. He demonstrated this in particularduring the ten years during which he fought on the legal level to havethe arbitrary nature of his disciplinary transfer from Wittenheim toMulhouse recognized under pressure from the local Gaullist deputy, whostill deserves all our contempt. . And he also manifested it in aconstant epistolary guerrilla war, regarding the routing of ÀContre-Courant, maintained with a Post Office administration bent onfinancially strangling the activist press.Alongside his commitment to ACC and in full coherence with thisnewspaper, Bernard was involved in all the militant mobilizations inMulhouse and its surroundings. He thus gave impetus to the local groupRas l'Font in the 1990s; took part in the mobilization of the unemployedand precarious in 1997-1998 and in the actions of the DAL in thefollowing years; he was the soul of the Mulhouse collective for theabolition of public debt after the financial crisis of 2007-2009; etc.And he has obviously taken an active part in all the highlights of thesocial movement over the last three decades: in 1995, 2003, 2010, 2016and until last spring. Without forgetting his activism as a municipalopponent outside of political frameworks, known and feared, which didnot prevent him from promoting the invalid vote, a cause that was dearto him.Criminal waste landfill projectOnce the ACC adventure ended, in 2014, he continued to campaign indifferent frameworks, notably that of L'Alterpress 68. He got involvedin the fight against Stocamine, this criminal project of landfillingwaste. in the old potash mines which threaten the water table of theAlsace plain. And he sought to draw the attention of public authoritiesto the potential danger represented by the Borealis factory inOttmarsheim, a potential new AZF. And, already ill, at the end of June2023, he still insisted on participating in the first meeting of theEarth 68 Uprisings, thus testifying that the fight for labor rights andsocial rights should not be separated from the fights against attacks.increasingly serious to the natural conditions of human existence.The fight against multifaceted capitalist oppression and for a socialistfuture that we led together with Bernard continues.
