WORLD WORLDWIDE BELGIUM BRUSSELS - BRUZZ International - Online news journal UPDATE - 02-04-2024

02-04-2024

In this edition of BRUZZ International, we have a closer look at the Mexican community in Brussels.
Last Sunday on the show:

Los Charros in Ixelles

The Carrizo brothers lived most of their lives in Mexico and started a restaurant in Argentina in 2012. But because of their Belgian mother, they ended up opening two restaurants together in Brussels: at De Brouckère, with Mexican fast food, and in Ixelles, with typical Mexican dishes.
"We have cochinita pibil, tinga with beef or chicken, chilorio de Sinaloa, mole. And other small typical dishes like tamales, tostadas, chilaquiles and enchiladas."

Dancer Gea Zazil: 'Mexico has marketed its folklore very well, perhaps too well'

Gea Zazil brings Mexican folklore to life in Brussels. A choreographer and dancer with a passion for lighting design, she is the driving force behind several Mexican festivals in the city.

"I give Mexican dance workshops to people of all nationalities who are fascinated by Mexico. The aim is to be able to perform traditional dances at the various festivals. Día de Muertos, Las Posadas and of course the holidays".

Correspondent Marco Appel: 'There are few Mexicans here, but we make a lot of noise'

Marco Appel has been active as a journalist in Brussels for almost a quarter of a century. After working for the well-known magazine 'Proceso' for a long time, he founded the news site 'Underground Periodismo Internacional' with a colleague two years ago.
"The Mexican community is very active politically, culturally and artistically. That is interesting, because as a journalist I am interested in everything we are doing here."

Taco Mobil: 'It used to be impossible to find real Mexican food in Brussels'

Selene and Olivier have had their Taco Mobil for ten years. They can be found with their food truck every Thursday in the Parvis de Saint-Gilles, but you can also find them at all kinds of events. "I have learnt a lot from working in public spaces. People are more willing to tell you their story. But if someone had told me before that I would be making tacos in Brussels, I would have said: No way."
