WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, UCL AL #349 - Culture, Read Stéphane François: The New Right and Nazism, a never-ending story (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

The political scientist Stéphane François, whose previous work on

far-right countercultures we had already enthusiastically reviewed,
invites us to return to one of his areas of study, the New Right. After
Les Néopaganismes et la Nouvelle Droite and La Nouvelle Droite et la
tradition, both published by Archè in 2008 and 2012, and more recently
La Nouvelle Droite et ses dissidences published by Editions Le Bord de
l'eau in 2021, Stéphane François revisits the links between the New
Right and Nazism.
The New Right, the name given in 1979 by its adversaries to this
far-right movement born in 1969 around the Research and Study Group for
European Civilization (GRECE), is today the ideological matrix of the
extreme right-wing identity and nationalists revolutionaries. Its
influence goes beyond the most violent small groups and widely irrigates
the National Rally or Reconquest!, in which we find many of its former
activists. Stéphane François shows here how the New Right has largely
eliminated folklorist references to Hitler, making more reference to
university-trained Nazi ideologues, and gone beyond "narrow nationalism"
for a broader racialist conception, "developed European scale",
highlighting a so-called "white race" and Indo-European unity. The New
Right also rehabilitated the völkisch linking National Socialism and the
German "Conservative Revolution". From the refusal of modernity to a
"rooted" ecological vision taken up today by identity activists, various
elements of völkisch are today taken up by the Western extreme right.

The author also shows the links between the New Right and certain
American racist thinkers of the early 20th century, but also the
influences it exerts in return among the promoters of a racial identity
discourse across the Atlantic. Thus the New Right, by rehabilitating
Nazi theses which it associates with the German "Conservative
Revolution", has renewed the ideological corpus of the extreme right,
and appears today as one of the major influences of both the American
alt-right, the Reconquest! party, but also the most radical
manifestations of the far right "such as the terrorist actions of white
supremacists".
