WORLD WORLDWIDE US USA - New York NY - New York NYC - the city THE CITY - Cannabis fund investigated, Adams donor hotel shutdown

Dear New Yorkers,

Readers of this newsletter have likely seen our recent investigations of the state’s so-called “social equity” cannabis fund — including how a private equity firm inked the lopsided deal and how New York’s cannabis officials repeatedly warned Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office that the state should not sign the contract.

Now Albany lawmakers have called for the fund to stop issuing loans to dispensary operators in light of our reporting — which came from digging through hundreds of documents over months.

They also want to see an investigation by the state's inspector general.

“What this story describes is not a social equity fund. We must get to the bottom of this,” said State Sens. Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) and Gustavo Rivera (D-The Bronx) in a joint statement.

Weather scoop by New York Metro Weather

Friday's Weather Rating: 6/10. Summer says hello! Much warmer (even hot, at times) with highs in the low 90s. Partly cloudy early, followed by showers and storms during the afternoon — a few of which could be severe. The vibes are kinda unstable today.

Our Other Top Stories

  • The city’s buildings department has ordered construction work to halt at a major hotel project in Midtown owned by a prominent donor to Mayor Eric Adams — as administration officials acknowledged that the developer, Weihong Hu, failed to meet local requirements for preserving affordable housing at the site. The action comes on the heels of a reporting project published last month by THE CITY, Guardian US and Documented about the mutually beneficial relationship between Hu and Adams, which highlighted Hu’s failure to provide the affordable housing after enlisting a close Adams associate to intervene.
  • Hundreds of people are suing the city to bring allegations of past sex abuse at youth detention centers across the city. Some 250 lawsuits point to what attorneys called a “culture of secrecy” in the juvenile jail system. The suits are possible because of a City Council law, passed in 2022, that allows past survivors of long-ago sexual abuse to pursue cases through March 1, 2025.
  • Approximately 4,140 people were counted sleeping in the streets and subways of New York City this year, the highest number of unsheltered homeless people in more than a decade according to a federally-mandated survey. The figure has risen as the city’s long-standing “right to shelter” protections have collapsed for migrants arriving in the city.

Things To Do

Here’s what’s going on around the city this week.

  • Friday, June 14: A concert in celebration of Juneteenth by The Unsung Collective, soprano Janinah Burnett and baritone Phillip Bullock. Free at 6 p.m. at The Forum at Columbia University, 601 W. 125th St. in Harlem.
  • Saturday, June 15: A Shakespeare Faire with open mic sonnet reading, scenes from the Bard’s famous plays and a Shakespeare insult contest. Costumes encouraged. Free from 12 to 3 p.m. at Kew Gardens Cinemas Park, Austin Street and Lefferts Boulevard in Kew Gardens.
  • Saturday June 15: All-day art programs including a clay workshop, interactive dance and puppets at the AIM Biennial closing event. Free with RSVP from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Bronx Museum, 1040 Grand Concourse in The Bronx.
  • Sunday, June 16: Three back-to-back performances of Oscar-nominated filmmaker Sam Green’s live cinema documentaries, with live music by Yo La Tengo, the Kronos Quartet and more. Pay-what-you-wish at 7:30 p.m. at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center on the Upper West Side.

The local couple who found a safe full of cash in a Queens creek traveled to the nation’s capital to get the muddy currency verified by the Treasury Department. Federal experts estimate they found between $50,000 and $70,000.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Friday.
