Dear New Yorkers,

Only a relative handful of eligible voters turned out across the five boroughs for New York’s primaries, which on the Democratic side had been billed as a referendum between centrists and leftists.

The results yielded wins for both, but few upsets or surprises.

In a heavily covered Congressional race for a seat representing Westchester along with some of The Bronx, Rep. Jamaal Bowman became the first “Squad” member to be defeated at the polls.

Bowman lost to Westchester County Executive George Latimer, in a campaign where outside groups spent a record $18 million to unseat Bowman, a critic of Israel who was elected on the heels of the 2020 George Floyd protests.

In Assembly races, incumbents who faced challenges largely held on, regardless of their political positioning.

An exception was Juan Adrila in the 37th Assembly District, who ran a very low-profile campaign after supporters abandoned him amid serious sexual misconduct accusations. He lost his seat in Western Queens to Claire Valdez, one of two challengers.

Win Rozario Family Takes Legal Action

The family of Win Rozario on Tuesday watched additional body-worn camera footage of his fatal shooting by police in his Queens home in March. Representatives for the family say the video shows cops handcuffing the 19-year-old Rozario just after they shot him multiple times.

The representatives, from the group the Justice Committee, held a press conference outside the office of State Attorney General Letitia James where they also questioned the medical care that cops provided to Rozario.

James’s office, which met with Rozario’s mom, dad and brother Tuesday, is conducting a criminal probe of police officers Matthew Cianfrocco and Salvatore Alongi, who responded to a 911 mental health distress call Rozario himself made. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division and the watchdog Civilian Complaint Review Board are also investigating.

Also on Tuesday, an attorney for the Rozario family, Luna Droubi, said she had filed a $30 million notice of claim against the city, a required step before filing a lawsuit, on behalf of Rozario and his family. The NYPD did not respond to a request for comment.
