The SNCF threatens to dismiss two trade unionists who reported sexual
assaults at the SNCF. Solidarity in the face of repression has been
organized in recent weeks to support them and stand up. ---- This
Wednesday, April 17, more than 350 people gathered in front of the SNCF
Grand-Est Regional Directorate building in Strasbourg. This rally was
organized by the SUD-Rail Alsace union in support of their comrade Régis
summoned before a disciplinary council and threatened with dismissal.
The day before, another rally took place at Paris Gare de l'Est in
support of Marion, a railway worker in Strasbourg and also summoned to a
disciplinary council.
When reporting becomes "harassment"
Last May, Marion denounced a sexual assault against her by one of her
colleagues. Régis, union delegate and witness to the scene, reports
these facts and supports the railway worker in her approach. No measures
are put in place to protect Marion, the matter is kept quiet and, worse
still, management returns the attacks and accuses Marion and Régis of
harassing management. This March 8, international day of struggle for
women's rights, Marion received a summons for a disciplinary interview
on March 15, a great lesson in "feminism" from the SNCF which boasts of
fighting against sexist and sexual violence!
Under the fire of repression
Régis, a railway worker for over 25 years and a trade unionist for
almost as long, is faced with the repression which is hitting the trade
union movement in France, particularly in recent months. SUD-Rail
explains in a leaflet: "Ethics is seized and an investigation by a
private firm is set up against the whistleblower. This investigation
criticizes Régis, the SUD-Rail delegate who defended the colleague
victim of the attack, of being too often at the station to accompany his
colleagues during union office hours, of having filed far too many
Requests for Immediate Consultation (DCI ), in other words for having
"done too much" his work as a delegate, which is why the management of
the SNCF is now asking for his dismissal."
Far from letting this happen, the railway workers organized rallies at
the same time as the summons of Marion and Régis from Strasbourg to
Paris. Many people responded, notably student and teacher unionists from
the local union Solidaires Alsace, strengthening at the same time
inter-professional links. The CGT Cheminots was also there in support of
the two comrades, showing a certain union unity among rail workers in
Alsace.
Solidarity and unity are important in the face of sexist and anti-union
actions by SNCF management, because this fight goes beyond the company.
Indeed, after a social movement against pension reform of exceptional
magnitude and longevity, employers and the government want to take
revenge by silencing union activists. But when a worker is attacked, our
entire class is attacked and we are not going to let it happen.
