Help Us SAVE Vulnerable Feral Cats in South Africa

Dear friends,

Thank you for your unwavering support of Animals First Aid and Lanseria Ferals. Your kindness has been instrumental in allowing us to continue our lifesaving work with feral colonies in Lanseria, South Africa. Every meal provided, every cat sterilized, and every life saved is a testament to the dedication of our supporters like you. We have been able to do so much because of your generosity, but our work is far from over.

The Growing Crisis for Feral Cats in Lanseria

Feral cats are among the most vulnerable creatures in our society. They face daily threats of starvation, disease, abuse, and even torture. Tragically, many are killed for survival. A horrifying reality in South Africa is that some people, driven by extreme poverty, have resorted to eating rats and cats to survive. The article "We Eat Rats and Cats to Survive" highlights the extreme measures people in informal settlements are forced to take due to dire circumstances. While the human crisis is devastating, the impact on the feral cat population is no less tragic.

These cats, which live on the margins of society, are often subjected to brutal mistreatment. Some are hunted for food, while others are tortured for sport. Many ferals live in fear of being captured by cruel individuals who do not see them as living beings deserving of care and respect. This ongoing abuse is an issue that demands immediate action, and we at Lanseria Ferals are committed to protecting as many of these vulnerable cats as possible. However, our ability to continue this essential work is dependent on resources—resources that are currently running low.

The Importance of Sterilization

Without proper intervention, feral cat populations grow rapidly, leading to increased suffering. Lanseria Ferals works tirelessly to sterilize these animals, not only to prevent the growth of colonies but also to reduce the number of cats facing these horrific fates. By sterilizing and managing the feral population, we can help protect them from abuse, starvation, and further degradation.

We have been quoted R4,700 ($266/£205/€246) for one new, larger drop trap that will allow us to catch and care for sick, injured, and unsterilized adult ferals. This equipment is crucial to our mission. The cost is for one trap, but we need as many as we can get. Depending on your support, we can buy more traps, which will allow us to help more cats. Nina Wilson, the founder of Lanseria Ferals, has generously allocated some of their food funds to pay the supplier so that the traps can be delivered within the next two weeks, but this leaves us short on food supplies for the following month.

The Reality of Cat Abuse in South Africa

The abuse of cats in South Africa is a severe problem. Numerous reports highlight the disturbing trend of cats being hunted, tortured, and even killed in inhumane ways. In impoverished areas, where access to food is scarce, cats are seen as a source of survival, hunted for consumption. This is not just an isolated issue; it is part of a broader challenge that feral cats face every day. Whether it's being poisoned, trapped for cruel sport, or captured and eaten, the lives of feral cats in South Africa are filled with unimaginable suffering.

How You Can Help

We are asking for your support to help us raise the funds needed to both reimburse the cost of the trap and replenish our food supplies. We cannot continue our vital work without you. Your donation today will directly fund:

•    The purchase of the new drop traps, which will enable us to catch adult ferals for sterilization.

•    Feeding the feral cats that depend on us for survival.

•    Continuing our sterilization efforts to control the feral population and prevent further suffering.
