For a week, Lebanon has been subjected to mass bombings and the
beginning of a ground invasion by the Israeli army, whose death toll isalready approaching 1,000. Israel announced that its objective, after
assassinating Hassan Nasrallah, was to destroy Hezbollah. This is not
about defending this organization, an accomplice of Bashar Al-Assad and
a player in the bloody crushing of the Syrian revolution. But nothing
justifies Israel bombing Lebanon. The Lebanese people will resist this
imperialist aggression.
While Hezbollah bombed northern Israel in support of the Palestinians ,
it did not want a war. Lebanese Hezbollah, Iran, the Yemeni Houthis and
Iraqi Shiite groups, who are Israel's main opponents, do not have the
means to do so, despite the Iranian missile strikes on October 1 .
But Netanyahu, bogged down in Gaza and increasingly isolated, continues
to sow death throughout the region. Israel brandishes its "right to
defend itself", but we must not forget that Hamas and Hezbollah were
born from the aggression of the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples by
Israeli imperialism. Neither the United States, nor the European Union,
nor France seem ready to exert real pressure to put an end to this
escalation, despite some timid protests, and continue to supply it with
weapons.
The French media, from the beginning, have been complacent about these
massacres. If the "axis of resistance", and in particular reactionary
Iran, are only a resistance hypocrisy, Israel - which has also recently
bombed Yemen and Syria - is running the risk of a regional conflagration
with dramatic consequences. Netanyahu continues to condemn the region to
a quasi-permanent war.
After the “Israel-Hamas war”, the fable of an “Israel-Hezbollah war”
For a year, some media discourses have been avoiding the description of
"genocide" in Gaza, by referring to an "Israel-Hamas war", which tends
to reduce Palestinian resistance to Hamas and legitimize the razing of
Gaza with today at least more than 40,000 dead and probably many more
with the bodies still stuck under the rubble. Today, we are served the
fable of an "Israel-Hezbollah war". The progressive camp must vigorously
oppose this new communication operation and denounce this legitimizing
discourse.
Let us recall that this is not the first time that Lebanon has suffered
Israeli atrocities. The first invasion took place in 1978. In 1982,
Operation Peace in Galilee left 20,000 dead in Lebanon, and the Israeli
army is responsible for the massacre of Palestinians in Sabra and
Chatila by a far-right Lebanese militia. The war in the summer of 2006
left 1,100 dead and destroyed much of Lebanese infrastructure.
Most Western states, including France, are complicit, because the
over-armed and nuclear-armed State of Israel - historically thanks to
France - is the guarantee of its regional hegemony. It is the
Palestinian people who pay the cost, but also the Lebanese people.
Let's continue the fight
The Libertarian Communist Union calls for protests against the current
attacks on Lebanon and Yemen, for denouncing the genocide in Gaza that
has been going on for a year now, and for supporting the BDS campaign
(Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israeli Apartheid). This
campaign is bearing fruit, as demonstrated by the withdrawal of Axa this
summer. It is crucial to maintain the pressure, particularly on
Carrefour and BNP Paribas.
Let us also not forget that it has been forty years since Georges
Ibrahim Abdallah, a Lebanese communist activist, was imprisoned in
France, although he has been eligible for release since 1999. On October
7, 2024, justice must once again rule. We demand his immediate release.
His case reminds us that the martyrdom of Lebanon did not begin this week!
Stop the massacres in Lebanon and stop the genocide in Gaza, stop
apartheid and colonization, stop French and European complicity! Support
the resistance of the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples!
