WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE FRANCE - news journal UPDATE - (en) France, Monde Libertaire - Pages d'histoire N°65: Voyage à facholand (ca, de, fr, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Two valuable works have just been published that provide useful

information on the progression of the extreme right in French society.
---- Pop Fascisme is written by two journalists, Pierre Plottu and
Maxime Macé, among the best specialists of the extreme right. For
several years, they have been working tirelessly to bring to the
public's attention all the strategies and infiltrations of the extreme
right. They have published numerous articles, notably in Street press,
and now host Frontal in Libération. ---- Their book focuses on a
sometimes underestimated aspect: the role of the internet in the
progression of the nationalist right. Its success abroad with Trump in
the United States and Bolsonaro in Brazil in particular should have
raised more alarm. Social networks and the means of communication put in
place are one of the elements of the conquest of power by the extreme right.

Since the mid-2010s, extreme right-wing sites have literally taken over
the web. The first initiatives come from two different groups, on one
side the apostles of the Soral-Dieudonné tandem, who develop conspiracy
and anti-Semitic theories and on the other side the "identity" circles,
who have created several "reinformation" sites, according to the
terminology they use. In fact, information is disinformation. Making a
big deal out of an event to prove that it extends to society as a whole.
Faced with the success of this method, several leading figures of the
radical far right have chosen to do the same, distilling their hatred in
broad daylight, without real contradiction. A latent racism has
appeared, hateful content is multiplying, threats and intimidation of
people too.

The authors dissect the mechanisms of the rise of fascism online. They
show what are the main themes used: pseudo-humor, supposed derision,
calls for vindictiveness. It is on this basis that the far right has
prospered, benefiting since then from the sounding board that the
Bolloré system constitutes, moving from a low-noise broadcast to the
saturation of the media space. The authors present a brilliant synthesis
of this media-political evolution.

At the same time, Jacques Leclerc publishes a new synthesis on the far
right which extends his useful dictionaries on the far right (published
by L'Harmattan between 2008 and 2019). He sets out to offer a detailed
analysis of the different far-right networks ready to use violence. The
inventory begins with a presentation of the groups multiplying calls for
violent action (from the traditionalist Catholics Academia Christina to
the small Vendée group Virido Galia). He then sets out to show the
persistence of the traditional families of the far right, from the
monarchists of the Action Française to the national revolutionaries and
the national socialists. These different groups are now almost firmly
established. Several of them, such as the Zouaves of Paris or the Union
Defense Group, have been active for several years, multiplying physical
attacks against left-wing activists and anti-fascists. Secondly, he also
notes the proliferation of informal structures bringing together former
military and police officers ready to take armed action. Their number is
certainly marginal, but these groups are growing all the more rapidly as
society becomes porous and receptive to fascist ideas. He also
highlights the expansion of the cultural networks of the extreme right
(music, gym and of course the internet). The extremely detailed
investigation usefully completes and synthesizes many previous works.
