Dear New Yorkers,

Brooklyn Democrats have nominated Frank Seddio, their former party boss, to be a commissioner on the city’s Board of Elections.

The Board has 10 commissioners, made up of a Democratic and a Republican appointee from each borough. They are volunteers who collect a modest stipend — though the position of general counsel earns $200,000 a year and is in charge of assuring the Board of Elections is in compliance with the state’s complex election laws.

Seddio, if approved by the City Council, would take the seat currently held by Rodney Pepe-Souvenir, who isn’t seeking another term and is said to be after the general counsel role.

The board is considered one of the city’s last bastions of nepotism and party patronage. It has often faced scrutiny after poorly run elections — particularly in presidential years when turnout is highest.

Our Other Top Stories

  • Mayor Eric Adams is publicly refusing to reconsider his 2025 reelection campaign, even while facing federal corruption charges and multiple probes. The latest challenger to Adams in the city’s 2025 mayoral race is a former prosecutor: Jim Walden, an independent, who is expected to announce today. In an interview with THE CITY, Walden said he’ll campaign on promising to run an administration that won’t find itself fielding constant subpoenas and search warrants.

Things To Do

Here’s what’s going on around the city this week.

  • Thursday, Oct. 24: Celebrate the New York Liberty’s WNBA win! The city is holding a ticker-tape parade for the champions starting at 10 a.m. in the Canyon of Heroes on Broadway in lower Manhattan. Sign up here for ticket notifications about the City Hall celebration right after the parade and Barclays Center festivities in the evening.
  • Friday, Oct. 25: An outdoor watch party of Game 1 of the World Series, with the Yankees facing the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Free at 8 p.m. at the Museum of the City of New York. (Drinks by the museum’s bar and bites by La Fonda NYC are available for sale.)
  • Saturday, Oct. 26: Celebrate “City of Forest Day” with an outdoor sound bath inspired by New York’s urban forests. Free from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Little Red Lighthouse in Manhattan.

THE KICKER: Remember the earthquake in April? The fact that we felt it so much in the city can apparently be explained by a previously unmapped fault line.

Thanks, as always, for reading. Make it a great Thursday.

Love,

THE CITY
