The Jubilee is approaching and already there are measures of a highly
repressive nature, in particular for transport workers. In a press
release dated 21 October, CUB national secretary Marcelo Amendola wrote:
---- The meeting convened by the Guarantee Commission on its "proposal"
to introduce additional periods in which to prohibit strikes by workers
of some essential services (Transport, Security, Health and
Environmental Hygiene) "insistent in the city of Rome" was held today.
In addition to the current exemptions, the proposal, valid for the
Jubilee, formulated by the Guarantee Commission, in the presence of
representatives of the Presidency of the Council, the Ministry of
Transport, Health, the Interior, the Commissioner for the Jubilee, the
Municipality of Rome, numerous employers' associations and the main
trade unions, is to prohibit strikes in the following periods:
from 23 to 26 December
* from 3 to 8 April
* from 24 April to 5 May; * from 14 to 20 May;
* from 29 May to 2 June; * from 27 July to 5 August.
From the discussion it immediately emerged that for the transport
sectors, in particular for those that deal with travelling "long
distances", such as, for example, rail and air transport, the ban on
strikes in the aforementioned periods will concern all workers in the
relevant sector and not only those who work in the city of Rome. This
latest crackdown on the exercise of the right to strike is inflicted in
the name of an unmotivated "willingness" of workers to ensure the proper
functioning of an extraordinary event, such as the ordinary Jubilee,
but, coincidentally, it comes in the aftermath of resolutions by the
same Guarantee Commission which, in the TPL and rail transport,
prohibits the concentration of strikes, imposing a rarefaction that
makes it difficult to identify the date on which it is possible to
abstain from work in struggle.
To conclude: The Guarantee Commission has also refused to take into
consideration compensation mechanisms which, by assessing the existence
of an emergency in certain periods, could loosen the stringent existing
legislation on the exercise of the right to strike, in less exposed
periods such as the Jubilee.
In this regard, it is significant to consider that, while the right to
strike is being addressed, already reduced by the validity of
liberticidal laws, more than anywhere else in Europe, nothing is being
said about the need to ensure that Roman citizens and not only, the
liveability of the city of Rome Capital and the usability of essential
services in the period in question, when over 35 million visitors will
be concentrated in the capital over the course of a year.
Nothing is being said about how the public transport service will be
able to withstand the shock, already suffocated by the lack of
investment that the Budget also plans to cut, the health services
(emergency rooms, hospitals, clinics) that are gasping under the blows
of the cuts inflicted for years, the guarantee of safety for the Romans,
while Italy is being dragged into war (...more than the danger of
immigration!), as well as environmental hygiene services, in a city that
is suffocating in garbage in ordinary periods!
AS USUAL, HOWEVER, EVERY OPPORTUNITY IS GOOD TO TRY TO GAG AND
IMMOBILIZE WORKERS, TO LIMIT THEIR FREEDOM OF MOBILIZATION.
The renunciation of the Indonesian Monsignor Syukur, of the Franciscan
Order of Friars Minor, to the cardinalate has caused a stir; he was one
of the 21 new cardinals, of which 20 are "electors", to be created in
the Consistory convened by Pope Francis for next December 7. Syukur is
62 years old, was born in Ranggu on May 17, 1962, and has been bishop of
Bogor since November 21, 2013. From 2018 to 2022 he was second vice
president of the Episcopal Conference of Indonesia, and since 2022 he
has been its general secretary. The Pope accepted his resignation,
certainly dictated by the coming to light of some cases of sexual abuse
of minors in various structures of the Church in his diocese of Bogor.
The archdiocese of Jakarta declared itself surprised, but the numerous
complaints from guests of orphanages and frequenters of sacristies
(involving altar boys), with related cover-ups, foretell a tsunami that
could have forced the future cardinal to an embarrassing resignation:
better to prevent, therefore. Bishop Syukur stated that "abuse must be
addressed openly".
To stay in Adia, in the second decade of October the Chinese government
and the Vatican renewed for 4 years the secret agreement on the
appointment of bishops; now there are no more clandestine bishops for
Beijing or excommunicated for Rome; both states recognize the nine new
bishops with the double Catholic-Communist imprimatur, making Taiwan and
the United States spit with bile, who had hoped in vain for a Vatican
alignment in their attempt to isolate the Chinese state.
A strong reprimand to Francis came from the Belgian government following
the anti-abortion statements made by the Pope on board the plane that
was taking him back to Rome after his visit to the Belgian state.
Abortion is "murder" and the doctors who perform it are "hit men": these
are the phrases that have infuriated not only the certainly not
anticlerical government of Brussels, but also personalities from the
worlds of culture, medicine, and Italian universities, as well as the
feminist world. Even more so if such ravings are cunningly mixed with
denunciations of the atrocities of Israel's war against the Palestinian
people, ending up equating the doctors who do their job with cynical
murderers. And yet, despite this, our pacifist supporters continue to
applaud the "pacifist" Pope.
