On November 4th, the anniversary of the "victory" in the First World
War, Italy celebrates the armed forces, a huge massacre to move aborder. ---- In that war, thousands chose to throw away their weapons
and ended up before firing squads. ---- The memory of the deserters and
the homeless of that time lives in concrete solidarity with those who
today desert the wars that bloody the planet. ---- The military
celebrations of November 4th serve to justify enormous military
spending, the sending of weapons and Italy's direct commitment to
military missions abroad, in defense of its neocolonial interests.
The far-right government fuels identity rhetoric, "sacred" borders, the
exaltation of war. Schools and universities have become a land of
conquest for the enlistment of bodies and consciences.
We are witnessing a global rearmament with unpredictable outcomes.
The increase in military spending and the resulting cuts to healthcare,
schools, and local transportation make our lives increasingly precarious.
In Italy there are barracks, bases, ports and military airports,
shooting ranges, used daily to fuel various war fronts.
In our country, the weapons used in wars everywhere are produced and
tested. Italian troops use them in missions abroad, Italian industries
sell them to countries at war. These weapons have killed millions of
people, destroyed cities and villages, irreparably poisoned entire
territories.
Along the borders of the Bel Paese, at sea and in the mountains, the
police and armed forces wage war on migrants, who have been killed along
the borders for decades.
The military are increasingly present on the streets of our cities, in
the suburbs where the lines of the homeless, the incomeless, the
precarious are growing. They serve to prevent and repress any social
uprising, to silence anyone who rebels.
Everywhere there are governments that demand that we kill to extend
their dominion, to annihilate the "enemies", other human beings
massacred in the name of the homeland, of religion, of the interests of
a few powerful people.
On every side of a border drawn on the maps with the force of arms the
bosses exploit and steal the lives of workers. Class solidarity pierces
and erases the borders of the States.
Everywhere there are those who oppose, there are those who desert, those
who tear up the flags of every nation, because they know that only an
international humanity can lay the foundations of that world of free and
equal people that can put an end to wars.
Today they would like us all to be enlisted.
We desert.
We do not enlist alongside this or that imperialist state. We reject
patriotic rhetoric as an element of legitimacy of States and their
expansionist claims. Everywhere. There are no good nationalisms.
We are on the side of those who, everywhere, desert the war.
We want a world without borders, armies, oppression, exploitation and war.
