On National Zumbi and Black Consciousness Day, officially declared a
national holiday for the first time on November 20, 2024, the militants
of the Libertarian Socialist Organization (OSL) will be on the march,
strengthening street demonstrations and other events throughout the
country. Together with our class, we will mark the date as a day of
struggle against racism, against the genocide of the black and
peripheral population promoted by the Brazilian State and demanding,
through popular struggle, the advancement of rights and living
conditions for the oppressed classes. November 20 has enormous
historical symbolism, marking the day of the black people's struggle for
freedom and against racism.
As anarchists, we fight against all forms of domination, such as
ethnic-racial domination (racism), which is a structural element of
power and domination in our society, as well as imperialism and
patriarchy. The capitalist-statist system, since its formation, has
needed imperialism, colonialism, patriarchy and racism to develop,
making discrimination and segregation of gender and race its keys to
functioning. In Brazil, the history of slavery is intertwined with the
consolidation of capitalism in our country. Both economic exploitation
and the different forms of capitalism construct an ideology that
justifies their existence and depend on these forms of domination to
continue existing.
Racism divides our class, serving as a justification for wars and
genocides, such as the genocide of the Palestinian people promoted by
the State of Israel (almost 50 thousand Palestinians murdered by Zionist
policy) and the genocide of black and peripheral people by the Brazilian
State. Between 2002 and 2022, more than 445,442 black people were
murdered in Brazil, showing that the mechanisms of violence and racism
remain intact in the country, independent of the government and
political spectrum.
Historical racism in the country also contributes to low wages and poor
living and working conditions, from the period of slavery to the extreme
precariousness of life today. Although the black population represents
56.7% of the Brazilian population, 45.2% of them work informal jobs,
without guaranteed labor rights. In practice, this means that almost
half of black workers work informally and without labor rights
guaranteed by the CLT. Black men earn 41.9% less than white men and
black women earn 38.9% less than white women. These statistics are
repeated in different situations, historically.
Capitalism and the State need racism, and it will not be from within
this system of death and exploitation that the solution to end
discrimination and racial segregation will come. Capitalism will only
create other disguises to keep the ruling classes in their positions,
such as black money and "representation policies", which put new masks
on the system, planting illusions in the oppressed classes, such as the
logic of entrepreneurship and the growing uberization of work.
Therefore, we reaffirm that the fight against racism can only develop as
a revolutionary and anti-capitalist struggle, with class divisions and
combative forms of mobilization. We believe in this path as an
instrument for unifying the different fronts of struggle of the
oppressed classes, without which we will not have real conditions to
confront this system and will remain fragmented, unable to advance on
the revolutionary path.
For us, the class structure of our society must also be understood in
terms of gender and race. In other words, far from dividing the class,
but only with this broader framework, fighting gender and race
domination, can we carry out the fight against exploitation in a
consistent manner.
In this sense, it is essential to reinforce the importance of the
struggles against the genocide of black people and for the end of the
police, as well as the struggles against the 6x1 work shift, against
labor reform and the outsourcing law.
In the case of the 6x1 work shift, we see how this hyper-exploitation is
directed even more towards the black working class. Of the formal
workers who work more than 40 hours a week, 65% earn up to two minimum
wages and 42% earn 1.5 minimum wages. Of every four white men who work
six days a week, one earns up to one and a half minimum wages, while for
black women, this proportion rises to three women in every five. The 6x1
work shift is very widespread in the retail sector and, within this
sector, black women receive the lowest salaries. 90% of black women who
work in retail receive less than two minimum wages.
We see, therefore, that all these demands are fundamental to combating
racism and advancing the class struggle, which must necessarily be an
anti-racist struggle. In other words, this means strengthening the fight
for a reduction in working hours without reducing wages, as a
fundamental issue in the fight against racism, articulated within a
broader and more revolutionary horizon.
