It is with sorrow that we announce the passing of comrade Gianni
Bernocchi "il Brozzi", a great supporter of Umanità Nova, whose
diffusion throughout Florence he ensured for years. ---- Gianni di
Brozzi has left us ---- We learn with sorrow of the death of Gianni
Bernocchi - known to all as "Gianni di Brozzi". ---- In the 70s, in
Florence, he had been part of the "Durruti" group and later of the
"Autogestione" group. ---- Starting in the 80s, he had consistently
distributed all the anarchist press. ---- After the death of his
parents, he had experienced a thousand difficulties and had found
himself a guest in a retirement home.
The comrades who knew him remember him with affection and sympathy.

Below is what some Florentine comrades wrote.
The words to define Gianni's path into anarchy and the sorrow for the
fact that he is no longer with us would fill an entire issue.
Gianni was born on January 16, 1952 to Misora and Renzo, two communist
partisans, in the Florentine neighborhood of Brozzi - at the time a
village in the middle of fields and dirt roads - hence the nickname by
which he was very well known.
He soon became passionate about the anarchist idea and we meet him in
the very early eighties as one of the most tireless animators of the
headquarters of the M.A.F. (Movimento Anarchico Fiorentino) in vicolo
del Panìco 2. And always and as long as he could he traveled kilometers
to participate and organize initiatives in the headquarters or outside,
to spread the press.
Gianni, ineffable, you could find him at night brushing "ANARCHY" in
3-meter-high letters on the banks of the Arno or putting up posters in
the most disparate places or keeping the office open even in the snow
playing anarchist records at full volume until, without speaking a word
of English, he arrived at an anti-nuclear demonstration in the middle of
Ireland.
His sacred fire was the press and, among all the anarchist production,
he had a visceral love for Umanità Nova, for "the newspaper". In the
marches, at the parties, in the offices, in the bookstores or in distant
newsstands, in all the occupied social centers, Gianni and the newspaper
were an inseparable pair for decades (Thank you!).
Gianni was gifted with a tenacity and (often) a disarming naivety in
making propaganda or in trying to involve you in his activities, and if
for some it was also easy to include his Anarchy in a thought "not about
money not about love nor about heaven", it was really difficult not to
love him: and after he retired he had even more time to bombard you with
phone calls...
In recent years he used to spend his summers in Piegaro, a town in the
Perugia countryside, in a small house inherited from his parents. There
he had invested all his resources and savings to give life, first in a
rented place and then in a purchased one, to the Anarchist Archive of
Piegaro (with this name there is a FB page to which you can send photos
or memories). Here he had collected books, magazines, portraits, ceramic
busts of Bakunin, involving local people. A History all his own of which
he was proud and where he also knew how to be chaotically hospitable and
generous.
Gianni had always lived with very challenging pathologies. In September
2022, he was taken seriously ill at home in Brozzi, was hospitalized
urgently and then transferred to a nursing home. From there he continued
to keep himself informed of the movement and the newspaper until he was
able to use the phone. He left us one night between that April 25th and
that May Day that who knows how many times we spent together.
