"Drill baby, drill". When in his inaugural speech last January US
President Donald Trump dusted off one of the warhorses that had allowed
him to win in 2017, promising more oil and gas extractions and at the
same time not giving a damn about the environmental and climate
consequences, the Yankee Republican Party stood up. "Burn baby, burn",
that is, let's burn everything that is underground, down to the last
drop: with this promise Trump seemed to promise the return of the
interests of the big oil companies, supported by the equally greedy
financial world. Interests that among other things had never died out,
just a little opposed in these years, more in form than in substance.
But that was enough to unleash the greed of the old masters. "We have
something that no other manufacturing nation will ever have: the largest
amount of oil and gas of any country on Earth, and we will use it,"
Trump has continued to say since then, mixing bullshit as usual
(Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world, Russia for gas)
and threats. A few months later, the world realized that it was not just
a return to the past but something much, much worse. Because the energy
restoration underway aims first of all to annihilate any semblance of
opposition and construction of any alternative. In language and in
practice. And it intends to spread from the United States to every part
of the world. Starting with the European Union, increasingly the foolish
servant of the Yankees, from which it has been importing LNG, the
liquefied natural gas that in the USA is obtained through the
devastating technique of fracking, at a price in gold since 2022. Even
the rearmament desired by the European Commission will be fueled by oil
and gas. In this Laszlo Varro, vice president of Shell (the largest and
most important energy company in Europe), was able to allow himself a
particularly spiteful post on LinkedIn, the social network dedicated to
work, in the past few days. Like the most idiotic of idiots, and without
anyone having burned his car in revenge. "The last time European
democracy had to take defense seriously, Winston Churchill did not try
to pressure Shell to supply less gasoline to the Royal Air Force to
reduce emissions" said Varro among other things, comparing different
historical periods and contexts like any idiot. To then conclude that he
expects from the climate community (whatever that means) a statement
along the lines of "our radicalism has been excessive". Understood?
Those who have protested in recent years about the climate disasters
carried out by these gentlemen should also apologize to them! What's
worse is that instead of telling them to fuck off, the governments do
everything they can to please the energy lords. As soon as Trump
declared that he wanted to impose tariffs on the European Union,
suspending them after just three days from the start to confirm what a
character he is from a shoddy soap opera, Adolfo Urso, who is
theoretically also a minister in the Meloni government (for Business and
Made in Italy, because there is no end to the ridiculous), rose from the
Italian audience to say that in response it was necessary to ... suspend
the Green Deal. What the trade tariffs imposed by the USA had to do with
the package of legislative measures to cushion its impact on the climate
is not given to know. And since Giorgia Meloni herself is considered to
be the most prepared among the fascist army in power, here she too began
to "forcefully ask Europe to review the ideological regulations of the
Green Deal", as announced at the League congress that confirmed the
other genius of Matteo Salvini as president, with that fake language
that only those who intend to mask their own ineptitude use. This
approach could extend to Sicily, in the sense that if in recent years
mega fossil fuel projects have been slowed down or blocked (also) by
opposition from the territories - from the Argo-Cassiopea gas pipeline
off the coast of Licata, built after 18 years due to the strong
mobilization of the No Triv movement, to the Porto Empedocle
regasification plant - now these projects could have renewed strength.
This hyper-decisionist approach could also extend to renewable plants,
which are already invading the island and which enjoy greater social
acceptability compared to fossil fuel plants. At the moment in Sicily
there are no direct and immediate connections between Trump's wicked
policies and the pressure from far-right parties on the revision of
"green" agendas but attention must be kept high, especially for Sicily's
role as a bridge with Africa, as we have also reported in previous
issues of Sicilia Libertaria. Compared to the USA, which has
historically always been little interested and little involved in the
events of the African continent, in fact, Europe knows that Africa is
the only basin where it still has some room for maneuver in terms of
energy hoarding, and for this reason it intends to exploit every single
natural resource. From oil to gas to biofuels, passing through a
futuristic hydrogen and massive doses of photovoltaic and wind power,
the requests of states like Germany are becoming increasingly strong for
Sicily to become the energy corridor of Europe. And if up to now such
desires have had to clash with the logistical difficulties of such
distant connections, as well as with the complexity of cooperation
between three or more states, this climate of restoration could even
bypass all of this.
At this point, to move towards the conclusion, it is useful to reiterate
a concept: the fossil restoration underway is not so much dangerous in
itself for a reversal of the balance of power as for the desire to
annihilate every other imaginary. For decades, energy companies have
imposed an extractivist, authoritarian, centralized model that is
currently based on fossil fuels but is already ready to eventually
switch to nuclear or renewables if it turns out to be a need that can no
longer be postponed. For decades, it is the energy companies that
dictate energy policies to states, that start wars that make armies
fight, that impose lifestyles and needs on people. Now, however, the
capital that ties states to energy companies and the world of finance
also wants to get rid of the minority that has given it a hard time in
recent years at least on the front of self-organization, information and
some political choices. If the world goes up in flames, power wants to
burn with it, because its true nature is self-destruction. Then,
paradoxically, it will be up to the fire of revolt to be the water that
submerges this attempt at fossil restoration.
