WORLD WORLDWIDE TURKEY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Turkey, Yeryuzu Postasi: Let's Fight Together for Taksim on May 1st! - Autonomous Workers' Unions (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

We share the statement published by Autonomous Workers' Unions. ---- The

March Protests, which broke out in a period of despair, allowed broad
segments to see the potential of militant and mass struggles to change
things. These protests, which emerged with the outburst of anger of
young people, most of whom are part of the working class, against
poverty, anxiety about the future and the oppressive policies of the
government, and the de facto strikes that took place one after another
in different cities and sectors, show the possibilities of a militant
and mass class movement. In this atmosphere, it has become a common
expectation that the May 1st demonstrations in Istanbul will take place
in Taksim, which is both one of the most important centers of the city
and has a symbolic meaning for the class movement in Turkey.

Although it is known that the government will continue its prohibitive
and oppressive attitude, large segments of the working class, especially
the young people who are the driving force of the March Protests and a
significant portion of whom are current or potential workers, have the
determination and will to march to Taksim. Both the ruling class and its
political representative, the government, and the tens of thousands who
have been filling the streets for weeks, are aware of the potential of a
mass mobilization that will develop in line with this symbolic goal to
weaken the government and create a qualitative leap in the workers'
movement.

Under these conditions, the announcements of DISK, KESK, TMMOB and TTB
that they will hold the May 1 rally in Kadiköy were met with great
disappointment and reaction. However, this attitude is certainly not
surprising. This decision, which coincides with the government's
expectations, cannot be explained by the fact that the relevant union
and professional organization executives are simply afraid. At a time
when the broad masses are ready for militant struggle, their abandonment
of the Taksim goal, which has the potential to change the balance of
power in favor of the working class, has once again revealed that these
structures serve the ruling class.

This attitude has significantly damaged the possibility of a mass push
to Taksim on May 1. Although they have largely lost their mass presence,
the attitude of these structures continues to be decisive for large
segments, both organized and unorganized. Because a significant portion
of the left has political and economic interests with these structures.
Furthermore, the fact that a focus that the masses can see as an
alternative and trust in has not yet been formed weakens the conditions
for a mass orientation towards Taksim, other than the symbolic actions
of small groups. This situation once again reveals the importance of
breaking the hegemony of DISK, KESK, TMMOB and TTB, which regresses the
class movement, and of building a revolutionary, militant class focus.

From our perspective, Taksim does not have any meaning in itself. This
goal is meaningful due to the symbolic importance it has today and the
potential for a qualitative leap it can create in the class struggle.
And this goal can be achieved not through the symbolic actions of small
groups, but through a mass and militant struggle. We must act with the
knowledge that gaining ground and gains in the class struggle is not
only about showing will, but also about how strong we are against the
capitalist class. While the power of the capitalist class stems from the
capital and oppression tools it holds, our power is related to how much
of a mass and militant organization we can create.

The will that emerged on May 1, 2024, the increasing workplace struggles
and the March Protests are all indicators that there is a potential for
a mass turn towards Taksim despite the unions. However, despite the
unions and the opposition within the system, the condition for this to
happen today is for a united Taksim will to emerge from the rising youth
movement and the militant components of the working class. We must
defend this in every area we are in and follow this possibility. What we
must not forget is this: Every action and move we make, including May 1,
must be made to increase our power and weaken the power of the
capitalist class. Starting today, we must organize in our workplaces,
accumulate power and work to create a revolutionary, militant class
focus. Only in this way can we win Taksim and more.
