The large demonstration that the residents of Campi Flegrei, along with supporters, comrades, and citizens of Naples, held on Saturday, February 7th, after months of mobilization and struggle, drew more than 4,000 people. The initiative took place in the Bagnoli neighborhood, northwest of Naples, practically the site where the "great event" of the America's Cup is scheduled to take place. A place where the natural phenomenon of bradyseism has always existed, for which-except for further speculative maneuvers carried out by political and economic powers-nothing at all has been done, and where the earth continues to tremble. It was a demonstration charged with the awareness that this was not a point of arrival, but a great starting point for all. Throughout the demonstration, we witnessed anger, determination, and the awareness that only the continuation of the struggle and the involvement of a large portion of the city can halt the "great event." An event that, thanks to the struggle, is increasingly seen, experienced, and perceived for what it is: yet another opportunity for speculation and enrichment by the usual, already uber-rich bosses; as always, with the endorsement, participation, and complicity of all institutions, at every level (the municipality of Bagnoli, the City of Naples, the Region, the Prefecture, and the State). The demonstration once again exposed the abysmal divide between the two worldviews, ever-present in the area over the years: that of the exploitative bosses and that of the workers, the proletariat, and the people of Bagnoli, the Phlegraean Fields, and the city of Naples. Bagnoli, one of the rare gems of the beautiful Campi Flegrei area, known for its important archaeological sites of Magna Graecia and Roman times on the one hand, and for its natural beauty and landscape on the other, has been subjected to savage, deadly, and criminal industrial development since the early 1900s, building factories such as Italsider, Eternit, and Cementir. All these factories produced highly polluting products, which over the years have caused hundreds of cancer deaths among workers and residents, devastating the entire territory, polluting and destroying significant portions of sea, air, and greenery. All this for the sake of limitless profits for the owners, supported by the state and the various governments that have succeeded one another over the years.
Meanwhile, the authorities, which through the state and its institutions operating on the ground have destroyed human lives and the environment, were attempting to patch up their processes of exploitation and death. This patch consisted of land reclamation by removing the landfill, creating a large public park where polluting factories once stood, and creating a beach on a clean sea, free for all. All this was imposed on the authorities by popular and proletarian mobilization and struggle, which, through self-managed and self-organized practices and processes, with conscious, grassroots, and horizontal assembly methods, was carried forward with strength and determination, primarily by the popular assembly of Bagnoli Campi Flegrei, organized by comrades, militants, and activists from the Villa Medusa People's House. (A process in which we comrades of the Anarcho-Communist group Francesco Mastrogiovanni have actively participated.)Now, however, all this will no longer happen, because, as always, the interests of those in power and property speculators are driven by profit and the enrichment of the few; interests that this time find expression and realization in the America's Cup, a sport for the rich and the rich. A mega-port for mega-yachts will thus be built, along with luxury hotels and restaurants for the super-rich, plus various support structures for the event, with paltry work for a few exploited individuals; all this to the detriment of the true and complete reclamation of the entire area where the deadly polluting factories once stood. The landfill will no longer be removed; the clean and free park, sea, and beach will remain, according to those in power and their logic, a dream.
But the struggle continues with greater anger and determination, blocking trucks carrying polluting materials along routes that pose a threat to traffic and the health of all residents, and continuously spraying toxic dust, which is being removed, without any real control, from the area where the Italsider plant once stood to build the structures for the "big event." The struggle continues with propaganda and counter-information campaigns throughout the area, with street assemblies, and with the collective search for new and more effective methods and practices of struggle, always with the understanding that only with the involvement of all residents and through antagonistic, conflictual, and self-organized practices will we succeed in imposing the other vision of the world: one that arises and develops to achieve equality, solidarity, well-being, and freedom for all.
Full and genuine reclamation. Securing the entire area. A free public beach for all. A public park. Excellent housing, healthcare, and education free for all. This is the America's Cup that the residents of Campi Flegrei and the city of Naples want.
We will continue to fight until our needs are met.
