AGAINST THE WORLD OF MODERN INTEGRATION ---- The May Day strike anniversary, a day dedicated worldwide to workers' struggles, is an event of great historical value for the working class and its eternal and timeless struggle against the State and Capital. It is not an anniversary celebration of past uprisings, but a call to struggle in the here and now. Specifically, it honors the Haymarket uprising in Chicago and the great strike struggles of those days with the main demand being the establishment of the 8-hour workday. Strikes that were organized and propagated with great contribution from the anarchists of the labor movement, with the sacrifice of the 8 comrades being a turning point in the history of class struggles. Specifically, on May 3, 1886 in Chicago, the police attacked gathered strikers, killing six and injuring several others. The next day, at a protest in Haymarket Square, which the police again attempted to disperse, a bomb exploded, killing one policeman instantly, and fatally wounding six others as well as dozens of strikers. A crackdown followed, while 8 anarchist activists were targeted with false evidence of their involvement. Ultimately, the 7 were sentenced to death by hanging.
The demands and struggle of the anarchist activists and the Haymarket workers' movement remain relevant and are still at the center of the struggle of the oppressed against State and Capital. The state-capitalist system, from its early stages to the present day, has only promised the masses exploitation, oppression, impoverishment and death.State and Capital are constantly trying to maximize their power and profits on the backs of the social base, without even the slightest regard for human life and dignity. The conquest of the 8-hour workday is constantly threatened, in a situation in which unpaid overtime and exhausting hours are the norm, especially after the official legalization of the 13-hour workday, while any reaction is already suppressed by the courtrooms, based on the Hatzidakis law. At the same time, working conditions are getting worse and worse, while workers are constantly losing their lives in so-called "accidents", which in reality are nothing more than employer-sponsored murders. A recent example is that of Violanta, where five workers lost their lives in an explosion, after a gas leak lasting many months, the result of multiple failures in safety measures, the responsibility of the employer. Of course, the exploitation and plunder of the working class by Capital is accompanied by state repression, which takes care to silence, strike and disperse every labor and popular movement that goes against the interests and methods of power, either through court decisions and the legal arsenal, or through the cops and repression on the street.
While the lower classes of society are impoverished in the dungeons of wage slavery, State and Capital reserve an even worse fate for refugees and immigrants. Those who are not killed at the border or at the bottom of the Aegean by the Greek coast guard, as is repeatedly done in the various shipwrecks, are sent to concentration camps with terrible living conditions, or at best, have the "freedom" to be exploited by the domestic bourgeoisie for cheap labor. We saw this once again just a few months ago, when on February 3rd, off the coast of Chios, a coast guard vessel ran over a boat of immigrants, resulting in at least 15 deaths and 25 injuries. At the same time, as if all this were not enough, the bourgeois media turn immigrants into scapegoats, blaming them for every social problem, problems created by the state-capitalist system itself, in order to, on the one hand, hide the real causes and, on the other hand, create internal unity based on national identity and the narrative of a common, external enemy.
Another event that reveals the murderous intentions of the rulers is the crime in Tempi, which is not an "accident", but the most brutal expression of the state-capitalist system that sacrifices human lives on the altar of profit and "development". For years, infrastructure has been abandoned and security has been degraded. The State, together with private interests, chooses cheap management over human life. Railways, like any public good, are being turned into a field of profit. Privatization, understaffing and the absence of safety checks are not accidental, but conscious political choices. The result is predetermined: when costs are reduced and responsibility is diffused, disaster becomes inevitable. The issue is not limited to attributing responsibility to individual persons, as it is the system of power itself that produces such tragedies. Hierarchy, the concentration of power and the commercialization of life create the conditions for a new "Tempo".
The same logic that sacrifices human lives in degraded infrastructure is also behind the conflicts of war, due to which countless people lose their homes, their families, are impoverished and murdered, for the interests and plans of the powerful. In a condition of generalized crisis of the global state-capitalist system, the war fronts are increasingly spreading with conflicts in the Middle East, in Sudan, in Congo, in Pakistan, in the war in Ukraine that has taken millions of lives, in the long-suffering Gaza that is experiencing war and genocide. States and Capital, in an effort to address their internal problems and find new fields of profit, send the children of the working class to the slaughterhouse of war, under the pretext of "national interest", "justice" or "freedom". As states arm themselves, the war industry spreads rapidly, having even invaded universities which are transformed into instruments of war. The Greek state, together with the entire Western world, provides supplies for the extermination of millions of people, financially and militarily supporting the murderous state of Israel in the genocide it is committing against the Palestinians and in the imperialist war against Iran.
The answer to the inhuman reality that the State and Capital are trying to impose on us, to exploitation, oppression, humiliation, is one: grassroots organization in all social fields and unmediated, unguarded resistance from below. The student movement, as an organic part of the broader social and class resistances, must be connected to the labor movement, and with a common struggle, with the solidarity of students, workers, but also more generally the entire social base, to put an end to the world of power and bosses. To fight militantly, with strikes, occupations, clashes, demonstrations, until everything returns to the hands of society. For a world without oppressors and oppressed, a human world, a world of equality, freedom and solidarity.
