Below, we publish an excerpt from the remembrance of Franco Serantini published in Umanità Nova on April 30, 2022, by Pepsy. ---- He was just over 20 years old, a member of the "Giuseppe Pinelli" Anarchist Group, and participated, along with many comrades, in the numerous political initiatives taking place in Pisa in those years. Franco was among the many who were trying to change the world, and on May 5th, he had taken to the streets to prevent a fascist rally: an activity that had characterized the actions of thousands of anti-fascists throughout Italy during the 1972 election campaign.
Franco Serantini's death had nothing to do with his marital status or his sad personal history, but rather with his choices, his decision to stand on the right side of the fence, his commitment, and his being part of a broader movement. Franco Serantini's assassination had everything to do with the violence the state exerts through its apparatus and its servants, a violence that began well before May 1972 and is still ongoing.
It is still important to keep alive an unembalmed memory of Franco Serantini and, above all, of his commitment, a memory that has accompanied us in all our struggles. Because throughout these years, it is as if we have always had him by our side, in small and large initiatives, in the best and worst moments, in the happy and sad, in Pisa and beyond. Because in 2026, as in 1972, Franco Serantini is still with us.
