Zero in Condotta has decided to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the start of the revolution and civil war in Spain with the publication of an unpublished text in Italian, originally published in 2019 in Castilian and subsequently in English and French. ---- Hot off the press, it is now available: ---- TOWARDS ZARAGOZA - CHRONICLE OF THE DURRUTI COLUMN 1936/1937 by Roberto Martínez Catalán 176 pages, EUR 15.00 ISBN 978-88-95950-89-1 --- On July 24, 1936, an armed column composed primarily of members of the CNT, the anarcho-syndicalist confederation, set out from Barcelona. At its head was a well-known "man of action," José Buenaventura Durruti. Only a few days had passed since he and many of those accompanying him had participated in the street battles, on the barricades, defeating the military uprising in the Catalan capital. Now they were heading toward Zaragoza, a key hub in the country, which had fallen into the hands of the coup-plotting military, and whose liberation was considered crucial to the development of the war and the revolution that had just begun.
Toward Zaragoza is the chronicle of this column: the story of its actions, but also of its organization and functioning, from its founding to its integration into the People's Army of the Republic, in the context of the simultaneous political, military, and economic development of civil society: from the evolution to the defeat of the revolutionary process that began following the coup-plotting uprising.
Based on extensive written and oral sources, including the voices of numerous protagonists of the events recounted, Verso Saragozza investigates, recounts, and delves into many of the issues faced by the militiamen, from the rejection of discipline and hierarchy, typical of the military structure, to the imposed militarization, the growing counterrevolution, and the tragic days of May 1937. This text raises reflections and questions, useful for those who, even today, ponder the revolutionary transformation of society.
Roberto Martínez Catalán, a professor of geography and history in Aragon, is the author of numerous articles and the book En el comienzo. Un cuento antiteológico.
Verso Saragozza is his first book in Italian.
