It seems the Americans are leaving their bases and leaving, taking with them weapons, baggage, and... nuclear weapons. ---- If that were true, we could make an exception to our assumptions and erect a monument to Donald Trump, who, in his hedonism, would be satisfied. We owe all the attacks on the Republic to NATO and the US bases in the country, starting with SIFAR (who remembers SIFAR and General De Lorenzo), the Gladio organization, the state-sponsored massacres, and the parafascist military corps; to US funding aimed at reviving the MSI and preserving the flame on the corpse of fascism, thus keeping alive the allure of the strongman and authoritarian attempts. Without the US bases, we would have avoided the unpunished murder of February 3, 1998, when a US military aircraft severed the cables of the Alpe Cermis cable car in Val di Fiemme (Trentino), causing a cabin to crash and killing twenty people, including passengers and the operator.
We still owe the Americans the colonization of the largest opposition party, through the Americanization, by the "Democrats," of its leadership. They provided the ideological cover needed to overcome the collapse of the Moscow "church," inducing them to import primaries and other amenities, such as the far more dangerous privatization of institutions and the state, the cult of the market, which led to the dismantling of public participation in the economy, even though Italy, lacking investment capital, needed state intervention to grow economically and ensure the permanence of many production chains in the country. We could have avoided deifying Mario Draghi for the sell-off of public industry assets, which he conducted on behalf of Goldman Sachs; we could have prevented the private sector from profiteering in the provision of public services, dismantling the state and the social economy and handing the country over to predatory capitalism. We should and could hail the abandonment of the foundations as the end of a nightmare, as the conclusion of the world war, as the true end of the fascist adventure and the resumption of a constructive dialogue to finally implement the Constitution, which has cost so much blood and so many struggles, to finally give a social dimension to the relationship between capital and labor in our country.
Without the US bases, we could independently rethink the founding reasons for being together in Europe and build on new foundations a truly European union, cohesive, social, and supportive, a Europe of rights and freedoms, without differences and exclusions of language, religion, and ethnicity, where traditions, ways of life, and sensibilities are shared to build peaceful coexistence between peoples, in a relationship of solidarity that can unfold without the blackmail of having to pay tribute to the empire, without having to rearm, but by seeking, through the restoration of violated rights, to identify common rules that allow us to live in peace not only now but for future generations.
What we express is not the need of an old and tired continent that no longer has the will to fight for its own well-being, but of citizens who have understood from their history that the logic of power, muscular confrontation, and the exploitation of others are the cause of injustices that sooner or later turn into submission and the loss of freedom and well-being.
It's a matter of choosing and deciding whether the race to maintain a now-lost hegemony can give way to a competition without war, based on trade, exchanges, and cooperation, to provide a positive response to common problems such as safeguarding the planet, the fight against disease, hunger, and poverty, or whether to wage war, with the awareness that sliding toward a devastating, nuclear world conflict is a tragically viable option and is tantamount to a one-way street that leads to annihilation.
