It's time for school assessments and reporting. The school year is coming to a close, and among the many obligations teachers are required to fulfill during this time, a ministerial circular has been issued requesting them to report on their activities to combat anti-Semitism. The deadline for completing the monitoring forms is mid-May. ---- The initiative, as expressly stated, is part of the "National Strategy for the Fight against Antisemitism," the Guidelines for which were recently issued by the Ministry of Education and Merit. This "strategy" is a planned intervention, defined in 2025 over a five-year period by a technical group comprising representatives of the Prime Minister's Office and several ministries, academics, and Jewish associations. These include UCEI (Union of Italian Jewish Communities), UGEI (Union of Young Italian Jews), CDEC (Center for Contemporary Jewish Documentation), and finally IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance), the association that developed the infamous definition that essentially equates anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism. Based on this definition, the Romeo Bill was recently approved by the Senate, in a somewhat toned-down version compared to the original, less oriented toward repressive and more educational purposes, also because the sector with the broadest-though not exclusive-application is precisely that of schools and universities. Training, education, and control-that is, ideological domination and cultural guidance-in a sector where the repressive aspect could be redundant, as it is largely covered by the specific disciplinary provisions of the sector.
Therefore, there is no room in schools for critical reflection on the actions of the State of Israel at a time when the genocidal actions and offensive military policies linked to the Zionist project are before the eyes of the world. This is unacceptable, because it amounts to anti-Semitism.
Moreover, the school year that is coming to an end has been marked by repressive initiatives aimed at excluding from the school context any criticism of the state of Israel and at containing initiatives of solidarity with Palestine.
At the beginning of the year, some regional school boards prohibited the discussion of issues related to the international war, and specifically the Gaza genocide, during faculty meetings. In the following months, the Ministry of Education issued two memos urging schools to ensure pluralism when discussing political and social issues with students, and inspections were ordered at some schools that had hosted a webinar with Francesca Albanese. In compliance with these provisions, some schools canceled the meeting with two Israeli conscientious objectors because the "guarantee of pluralism" was lacking. In early 2026, the MIM circular was issued requiring a census of Palestinian students at all levels of school-a discriminatory measure not related to any support measure, but merely to a blanket survey of students and, consequently, their families.
And now, at the end of the year, comes the monitoring of interventions to combat anti-Semitism and the reporting of the various actions contained in the "strategy," from the dissemination of the Guidelines to meetings with young Jewish people to discuss religious issues (sic!).
This unbearable interference is linked to the systematic demolition of critical thinking, a mission that the Valditara ministry has made a key contribution, but also to the general urgency of ideological control, to which the Romeo bill is primarily directed, acting as a further guardian of the political, economic, and military ties between Italy and Israel.
We hope that the survey will not be carried out.
We are confident, first and foremost, in the widespread defeatism of a teaching profession overwhelmed, especially at this stage of the year, by countless bureaucratic obligations; but we are also confident in the active will of the most sensitive groups to oppose yet another authoritarian imposition and the extremely serious political and ideological implications of the "strategy to combat anti-Semitism."
