WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, Trieste, Germinal: Anti-Fascist March June 19, 6:30 PM (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Friday 19 June - 6.30 pm - Riva Traiana, Trieste (TS) --- Link event: https://www.facebook.com/share/1CX5aWwHki/ --- We are returning to the streets of Trieste with a city-wide march that puts a vibrant, diverse, grassroots anti-fascism back at the centre. Recent weeks have highlighted the urgent need for mobilisation to nurture solidarity, the memory of the resistance, and the fight against all forms of oppression. Whilst the protests on 19 May demonstrated just how alive the anti-fascist spirit of this city still is, they also showed us once again how closely linked squadrismo is to the far right in power. Those who decided to oppose the xenophobic and nostalgic ideology and the historical revisionism of the institutions were in fact first attacked by armed neo-fascists and then by the 'forces of law and order'.

Beyond the political and media spin that in the days that followed attempted to rewrite the facts portraying them as a clash between opposing forms of extremism we wish to reiterate that fascists and their supporters cannot be allowed to operate politically in our city. The rehabilitation of Almerigo Grilz's fascist past, the issue of the eastern border and the Day of Remembrance are no coincidence: they are part of a broader operation of historical revisionism designed to erase the emancipation struggles of the past in order to nip those of the present in the bud, a present marked by a climate of war, racism and new inequalities. This is why neo-fascists and their gradual legitimisation by those in power form part of an overarching system of oppression; they underpin it and represent its darkest face. The proposal for "remigration" - deportation on racial grounds - is the culmination of this trend. It is given the green light as new security measures are approved by governments, the criminalisation of the 'other' becomes relentless, and administrative detention and the CPR system become the model for managing immigration. It is this supremacist rhetoric that allows the massacres of farm labourers, and it is the same rhetoric that promotes and organises a genocide streamed live.Against this authoritarian and xenophobic trend, we wish to reaffirm the strength of grassroots forms of solidarity as seen daily in Piazza Libertà the daily resistance in schools, universities and neighbourhoods, in workplaces, the struggles to defend our territories, and the coming together of people against the logic of war and division. The ideology of hate must find no place in our cities.

We said, "Where we are, they will not be": this applies to the macabre ritual of the "presente" for Grilz as much as it does to our daily lives. Because anti-fascism is not a commemoration, nor a static memory: it is a daily, cross-cutting practice that must once again bring life to the streets, squares and neighbourhoods of Trieste.
