In recent months, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has been engaging in a show of absolute absurdity and totalitarianism. Through a series of authoritarian actions (313 arrests at a live financial aid event, 38 arrests for a film screening, repeated violations of the asylum by the cops, lockout of all schools after 10, ban on any kind of political action and expulsion of their groups, closer connection with the war industry through research programs and conferences), the state and the rectorate authorities, in collaboration with the forces of repression, are striving to jointly build the modern business university, completely sterilized from any trace of a voice of resistance, suitable to serve the plans of the state and capital, which in times of war like now, are aligned with the needs of the war industry.
In yet another act of vindictiveness and intimidation, and following a complaint from the rector's authorities, a prosecutor's investigation is being conducted against three faculty members who supported the decision of SOFETH to mobilize in the AUTH administration building against the new authoritarian and absurd private agreement that they are being forced to sign under the threat of eviction (indicatively, we mention that it is forbidden for anyone other than the resident student to be present in the room and the security guard can come in at any time to check). The gathered crowd intervened with the vice-rector for student affairs, Iakovos Michaelides, who not only did not commit to canceling the agreement, but was gradually driven away by the henchmen who accompanied him. The three faculty members are suspected of the offenses of "disrupting the operation of a service" and "illegal violence against an accomplice", fabricated offenses that reveal the rage of the state and the rectorate authorities to stifle collective action and resistance and to terrorize the struggling world. The disciplinary framework that was voted on last summer, whose penalties include the permanent expulsion of students or the permanent cessation of service for professors, constitutes yet another repressive weapon in the hands of the rectorate authorities for the criminalization of political and union action within universities, the discipline of those who resist and the imposition of cemetery silence.Furthermore, the Deputy Minister of Education and former Rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Nikos Papaioannou (university police), is preaching the installation of cameras in common areas of the Campus and controlled entrances to the faculties (card readers). The state, also enlisting the media, has been trying to build the narrative of "violence, lawlessness and criminality" in universities to justify the antisocial measure of the existence of cameras and control of individuals entering universities, which, in reality, aims to further cut off asylum seekers from the rest of society, suppress mobilizations and any other form of resistance before it even takes place, dismantle collective action, and exterminate those who struggle.
As anarchist students, the university they dream of, the one of cameras and turnstiles, where cops will roam unmolested, of class barriers, tuition fees, research into armaments, the army and war, and discipline, will find us opposite. We must sharpen our resistance and stand as a barrier to anything that belittles our lives, from the expulsion of home-grown students to the collaboration of universities with the war industry. Through organizing in our schools and in the spaces where we operate directly and from below, we will collectively raise our resistance and be in the social and class struggles, demanding everything we deserve.
