Dear New Yorkers,
An extreme heat warning is in effect, and temperatures are expected to remain near 100 degrees throughout the long holiday weekend.
Try our guide on your rights and services during a heatwave, from city cooling centers (including some for pets) to understanding your Con Ed bill to what workers who have to toil in stifling temperatures are entitled to by law.
Speaking of which, Amazon delivery workers told The City Reporter that they’ve had to work dangerous and suffocating shifts. The company and its subcontractors have made some adjustments, but workers described those efforts as insufficient and lopsided, including being told to drink lots of water, but then finding water bottles locked in a fridge.
One crucial safeguard against a citywide blackout failed Wednesday through Thursday morning. Luckily, the Champlain Hudson Power Express, a massive transmission line generated from dams in Canada with the potential to carry 1,250 megawatts of electricity to the city, is back on after workers fixed an issue on the Canadian side of the line.
Lastly, between the international fleet of tall ships, holiday events, the annual hot-dog eating contest, the World Cup and Taylor Swift’s mysterious possible Madison Square Garden wedding, the city’s going to be packed and sweaty this weekend. Here's what to know about street closures, getting into big events and navigating overcrowded subways.
Thanks, as always, for reading. Stay cool and make it a great Fourth of July.
Love,
The City Reporter
