The growth is driven by major institutions powering through economic headwinds and new entrants setting up shop in the city. Nashville-based Vanderbilt University just opened a new Manhattan campus as part of the school’s plan to establish a Big Apple outpost where undergraduates can spend a semester away and graduate students can enroll in a new business and technology program.
Employment at private colleges and universities in the city rose about 5% to a record 170,000 in April, according to the state Labor Department. The most recently available data from the city’s Economic Development Corp. shows 516,000 college students in the five boroughs as of 2024.
“There is a flight to quality and students are choosing names they know,” higher ed expert Ed Venit said. “Columbia, New York University, Fordham and St. John’s all have brand names. You have Ivy League, Ivy League-adjacent and Fordham with its strong regional identity.”
Some local academic institutions are facing challenges. The New School has offered buyouts to employees, laid off staff and shuttered several departments to try to close a $50 million deficit amid an enrollment decline. At the School of Visual Arts, enrollment has dropped more than 30% since 2017 and administrators are dealing with a $22 million deficit.
Meanwhile, the Trump White House’s moves to reduce the number of international students coming to the United States are shrinking the pool of potential students. And federal funding cuts for academic and scientific research are further straining schools.
