"Three anarchists killed in the maquis. Victims of German bullets in France. ---- Three lives cut short in the prime of youth, just as the age of understanding was beginning to dawn. Because when you turn thirty, you begin to see things and understand them with more judgment, and when you carry out an act, you know why you're doing it. --- The oldest of them was Aguado, a man who had belonged to the movement[the CNT-AIT]and the specific[the FAI]since he was a child. He was the true anarchist. He only took what he needed for the day; anything else was superfluous. And if he had something to eat, he had to share it with someone who had none, and he did so with a thousand kindness." For him, there were no deprivations, only needs. The sadness of a life cut short!
The other comrade was García. A comrade steeped in the ideas and the Movement. He had been the secretary of the youth in the Valencia region of Spain. This meant he knew those libertarian young men, aged 31 to 39, who fought so hard for the cause that the people in general had embraced. That was his youth.
As for Mombiola, the youngest of them, he was the epitome of the true self-taught man, the genuinely cultured man, endowed with a clear intellect. A man of letters as well as a fighter. One who spread ideas by example. The true comrade. I remember that during the war, they wanted to appoint him commander of a battalion in the Durruti Column. He replied: "I don't want to command anyone, I want to be a soldier and nothing else."
He truly didn't want it. Because he was against militarization. He loved being what he was: a militiaman in the revolutionary movement. A movement that had grown so much among the Spanish people, defending the cause of the workers themselves. Neither superior nor inferior. Neither rich nor poor. Mombiola wanted to be a soldier in this social transformation. But not in an army of soldiers.
And to avoid becoming militarized, he joined a group of dynamiters. And after the loss of Aragon, he joined the Confederate battalion until our entry into France in 1939. There, after countless hardships, he joined the maquis, where he gave his life, like his other comrades. And so many others who sacrificed theirs, in France as in Spain.
In their memory, I write these lines, which prove that those of us who knew and loved them cannot forget them.»
