To understand the rise of Nazism, the work of Marie-Bénédicte Vincent is essential. She offers a social history of the National Socialist Workers' Party of Germany. It is not a history of Nazism itself, but rather a social analysis of its members and the social functions they could fulfill within the party apparatus. She shows how it structured itself in several stages. First, between 1919 and 1923, in a small, fragmented way. Public meetings were then primarily led by Hitler, who organized the party structure into two spheres: members and partisans. The first circle was composed of young men, veterans, and members of Freikorps who, after the Munich coup attempt, abandoned seizing power by force in favor of attempting to gain it through elections, relying on a large and organized party. The NSDAP then structured itself as a mass party, organized regionally with rigorous accounting in which membership dues were used both to organize local activities and to finance the party nationally. As one might imagine, the party was extremely hierarchical and top-down. Its local leaders had a direct link to Hitler. The same top-down structure existed at the local level, with each member assigned a function either directly within the Party or slightly on the periphery, such as the Storm Troopers, whose members were indirectly linked to the leadership. As one might expect, the Party was male and masculinist; fewer than 10% of its members were women. After 1933, membership surged, tripling in just a few months. Nearly 5% of Germans were members of the Party, which sought to control all of society through ideological control and state control. The party eventually became a structure encompassing over 20% of the population and participating in the complete mobilization of society. Its leaders and members fully participated in the system, controlling it and responding to the demands of the leadership and the established criminal system.
