We received and are publishing this following the August 8th demonstration. - The Web Editorial Staff ---- We took to the streets once again. Thousands of us did so once again. We're not interested in the sheer numbers. There are so many of us. We are Sicilians and Calabrians, but there are also many in solidarity with us, people who are fighting against further devastation in their own territories, people we will support by going to their territories to give them greater strength.
In all these years of mobilization, we have had to overcome many obstacles. On the side of the devastators were money and power. On our side, only generosity and our bodies. Despite this, we can say we have won. Today, the anti-bridge opinion is a largely majority in our territories. This square demonstrates this, as does the fact that there have never been pro-bridge squares of this size. The truth is that while a no-bridge population has formed over the years, the opposite cannot be said. There is no such thing as a Yes Bridge people. In these years of mobilization, many generations have succeeded one another, and each time they have passed on the baton of solidarity and the defense of our land. This happens because generosity and love for one's land are stronger than the lust for profit. This is why all their narratives, all their arguments, have crumbled. We were right. About everything.
Over the years, we have questioned ourselves. We have studied the project. We have produced enormous quantities of reflections, analyses, and counterarguments. At the end of all this, we have understood that they have no plan other than to continue the process and make money from it. They don't know if the bridge can be built. They don't know if it would stand. They don't have a financial plan. They only know that the longer this story lasts, the better for them because the more they will gain.
We know that all this revolves around the concessionaire, Stretto di Messina Spa, a company whose governance has seen compensation caps slashed, a company that consumes huge resources every year without enriching the community in any way. A company that, culpably, successive governments since 2013 have not liquidated despite the Court of Auditors' repeated requests.
Amid all this, the region remains suspended by a project that will continue to generate profits for a few, even if it is never built. Younger people-we young people-are leaving. Those who live in the areas affected by the construction sites are holding their breath. Our very economy remains suspended by a ghost. The entire Strait area feels threatened by construction sites that could last 10, 20, or 30 years, making our daily lives unlivable.
We know that this is not a coincidence. We know that this is a method. We know that this is the logic of major projects, of the military occupation of our lands, of major events, of emergencies. Extracting profits from the land-that's all they're interested in.
And we, on the other hand, would like to live in peace, to take care of the places we inhabit, to have the opportunity to stay, to be able to decide the future of our lives. We are many. We have nature on our side, our bodies, and the desire for a more fulfilling future. All they have left is power and money. That's why we defeat them.
And that's why, in thanking everyone who took to the streets today and everyone who has done so throughout all these years of struggle, in thanking our sisters and brothers who came from abroad to bring their struggles to this square, we decree, from below, the closure of the Strait of Messina SpA.
