At Kings County Hospital Center in East Flatbush, patients waited an average of 27 hours as of earlier this year. At Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, the wait was nearly 24 hours, the data shows.
Overall, it took patients an average of 12.8 hours to transfer from the emergency room to a hospital bed from 2022 until 2025 at NYC Health + Hospitals medical centers.
Experts say the daylong delays at some public hospitals are driven by a combination of staff shortages, a steady spike in the number of patients due to nearby hospital closures, and a growing number of patients with complex medical needs. Brooklyn has lost 1,600 hospital beds since 2010 from the closure and consolidation of health centers, according to the New York State Nurses Association.
“The ER is such a busy place, they’re surrounded by noise, monitors beeping, constantly going off, and lights being so bright,” said Harinee Suthakar, a nurse at Kings County. “It’s a very challenging circumstance for a patient to be in.”
A high near 75 during the daytime. A low around 68 at night. Mostly cloudy and chances of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day.
