In just three months, what a series of hardships the population has endured! The relentless heat waves and catastrophic fires reveal the cost-cutting measures taken on the purchase of Canadair water bombers and protective equipment for firefighters. Their health is at risk, as is that of the residents. And it's not over yet. ---- A government that, despite the drought, accepts the demands of the FNSEA (National Federation of Farmers' Unions), ever more focused on productivity, privatizing and diverting water to mega-reservoirs. No questioning of the system. Faced with the demands of police unions, it approves the proposed law on the presumption of self-defense.
Increased repression, laxity in the face of the demands of reactionary corporations, blindness to climate change. Nothing changes.
The cynicism of current political leaders postpones the necessary decisions until after the elections. Is water becoming scarcer? Are deaths on the rise? Are homes turning into ovens? Are students and teachers suffocating in unsuitable classrooms? Are workers struggling with heat waves? We'll see about that later.
They don't care, because they won't be in their positions in May-June 2027. And if the public protests, they'll send in heavily armed "law enforcement." Their objective for the start of the new term: maneuvering for the Senate elections!
But today, the most important question is the capacity of our societies to preserve biological, water, and climatic conditions. Le Monde libertaire, throughout its issues, has relayed these questions, and the press release from the Anarchist Federation, included in this issue, names those responsible.
