WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY ITALIA ROME - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, Sicilia Libertaria #471 - PALERMO. The city takes on shades of red and black (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

In the heart of the city. On Thursday, July 16, "Spain 1936" a film series hosted by the *Rouge et Noir* cinema (a name that could not have been more fitting) in Piazza Verdi concluded its run, commemorating the ninetieth anniversary of the Spanish social revolution. The program featured three events all screened in the original language with Italian subtitles complemented by discussions and screenings centered on that great libertarian dream. The series opened on Monday, June 29, with Ken Loach's *Land and Freedom*. The screening was introduced by Tommaso Baris (professor of contemporary history) and Salvo Vaccaro (professor of political philosophy), who explored the historical and social context of the Civil War and the internal conflict among anti-fascist forces dramatically depicted in Loach's cult classic pitting Stalinist communists against POUM communists and anarchists.

The second film, shown on Wednesday, July 8, was Vicente Aranda's *Libertarias*. It marked the first time the film appeared on the big screen in its original language, featuring Italian subtitles specially prepared for the occasion by Francesco Puma. "We couldn't wait for the social revolution to liberate women; liberation had to happen simultaneously, otherwise the revolution would never have been complete." This rallying cry of the *Mujeres Libres* (Free Women) was presented on screen by the cinema's artistic director, Gian Mauro Costa, and Antonio Rampolla. They highlighted a film of immense historical and artistic value a gem blending struggle, irony, and tragedy that remains unjustly unknown to the general public. Finally, the third and concluding event featured a film released in theaters this year: Manuel Gómez Pereira's *A cena con il dittatore* (Dinner with the Dictator). It is a brilliant, sarcastic comedy set in the opulent salons of a Grand Hotel, where General Franco demands an impromptu dinner. An impeccable warden finds himself along with a group of highly talented prisoners who are regime dissidents forced to plan not only a banquet in record time but also their escape. The festival's decision to present three different perspectives on the conflict proved a success, drawing a large, multi-generational audience greeted by a red-and-black flag hung in the cinema lobby for the occasion. Many young people attended, discovering or deepening their knowledge of a piece of history that had been almost entirely unknown to them, and leafing through the pages of *Sicilia Libertaria* and *Umanità Nova* for the first time. It was proof that, in Palermo, a type of cinema distinct from mainstream commercial circuits is still possible. The Rouge et Noir a venue always attentive to independent and auteur films had previously launched the "Mada - Make America Democratic Again" series, an open critique of Donald Trump's presidential dictatorship. On July 21st, the cinema screened Daniele Vicari's *Diaz* to mark the 25th anniversary of the events it depicts: the film reconstructs the violent police raid that took place on the night of July 21, 2001, at the Diaz-Pascoli school complex in Genoa.
