WORLD WORLDWIDE EUROPE ITALY ITALIA ROME - news journal UPDATE - (en) Italy, Sicilia Libertaria #470 - World Views: BOLIVIA. On the Popular Uprising (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

For several weeks now, a popular uprising has been underway in Bolivia, characterized by strikes, demonstrations, and roadblocks involving indigenous peoples, farmers, workers, miners, teachers, and young people, protesting the neoliberal policies imposed by President Rodrigo Paz Pereira.

After the first six months of Rodrigo Paz's presidency, the Bolivian population has protested and continues to protest with dozens of roadblocks in several departments (La Paz, Oruro, Potosí, Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, and Santa Cruz). The protest, involving large sectors of Bolivian society, is against a series of economic austerity measures that primarily affect the country's most vulnerable sectors.
Through decrees and budget reforms, subsidies (such as those on fuel) have been suspended, public spending has been drastically reduced, public sector hiring has been halted, and measures have been adopted to further deregulate the market, ceding territories and common goods to transnational capital.
Bolivia has the world's largest lithium reserve and large mineral reserves of tin, copper, gold, and rare earths. The population is therefore strongly convinced that the government is compromising with foreign multinationals to grant them new economic resources, including hydrocarbons nationalized by the Evo Morales government.
The intensification of social protests against this "austerity and liberalization program" has increased government repression. More than 150 protesters have been arrested so far, with at least 50 injured and one killed during the protests. Furthermore, Bolivian authorities have issued arrest warrants for several union leaders and members of the peasant movement. The charges against them include incitement to crime, criminal conspiracy, terrorism, terrorist financing, and attacks on the safety of transportation and public services.
To quell the protests, the government is also relying on militarization and a state of emergency, which it is already beginning to implement with a new decree. The state of emergency was consolidated with the right-wing Legislative Assembly's repeal of the law limiting the declaration of a state of emergency. This move increased social tension and protests organized by unions, organizations, and mobilized social movements. In early June, 80 roadblocks were recorded in various regions of the country. In support of the initiative, a large workers' march traveled 25 kilometers from the city of El Alto to the vicinity of Plaza Murillo, the seat of public institutions in La Paz. The cities of La Paz and El Alto were brought to a complete standstill due to the indefinite strike of urban transport workers and the shortage of fuel at gas stations.
The news coming from Bolivia has sparked international solidarity, shared by several anarchist organizations in other countries, with calls for self-organization against the state and capitalism, for social revolution in Bolivia and throughout the world.
