On Thursday, June 11, a delegation of biologists, chemical engineers, and biomedical scientists from the FINLAY Institute in Cuba held a public meeting at the Cre.Zi.Plus facility at the Cantieri Culturali della Zisa in Palermo. The meeting was organized as part of the collaboration between the CNR (National Research Council) and the FINLAY Institute in vaccinology and the fight against pandemics. The FINLAY Institute has been at the forefront of combating the COVID-19 pandemic, developing vaccines, such as SOBERANA, which have protected the health of the Cuban population. One of the fundamental principles of the Cuban revolution was free access to healthcare for the entire population, creating a world-class medical facility.
The FINLAY delegation, in addition to presenting the institute's scientific work, focused on the critical moment Cuba is experiencing, both economically and politically.Today, healthcare in Cuba is on the brink of collapse, and the situation is deteriorating dramatically and rapidly. Under the Trump administration, the economic and trade blockade has become more stringent, and the healthcare sector has felt the brunt of it. Essential and life-saving medicines are no longer available. Infant deaths have risen 100%, and the shortage of medicines and the raw materials needed to produce them is causing a health crisis unprecedented in scale. The economic blockade imposed by the United States since the early 1960s has now become total under the Trump doctrine.
Electricity is supplied for only one hour after a 26-hour interval. The cold chain virtually ceases to exist, with laboratories shut down.
The United States, in addition to blocking energy supplies to the Caribbean island, is forcing companies with economic and commercial relations with Cuba to leave the island by June of this year. The tourism sector, a primary source of income for the Cuban economy, has been abandoned by foreign partners. Disastrous consequences are expected.
The US administration, in addition to blocking goods and energy, has ordered international banks to sever all financial relations with Cuban banks. Among the countries that have severed banking relations with Cuba, obeying the US diktat, are Russia, China, and the BRICS countries. So much for "anti-imperialist solidarity."
Cuba today is more isolated than ever, and no one is coming to its aid. The North American plan is clear: economically strangle the Caribbean country, drive it into bankruptcy, and incite popular rebellion to justify military intervention with the goal of regime change. Trump wants to liquidate Castro's Cuba before the presidential elections to secure a result that US administrations have been pursuing for decades. This is with the silent complicity of Putin and Xi Jinping.
We can be critical of the Cuban revolution, its history, its subservient relationship with the Soviet Union, its one-party regime, and its repressive climate toward internal dissent. But today we cannot stand by and watch as the noose of the US blockade tightens ever more tightly, cutting off the lifeblood of a country that for 67 years has sought to build an alternative to free itself from the North American yoke.
