Witkoff’s meeting with Putin is a wrap, but little is known about what comes next.
With Witkoff praising Putin as a “humanist,” a statement Ukrainians will surely dispute following another night of deadly strikes, he also reportedly conveyed US and European proposals, mostly on Ukraine’s postwar security guarantees, to the Kremlin, which made no promises but said it would look at them. In terms of immediate outcomes, Putin released a US teacher imprisoned by Moscow while boasting that two hours’ worth of diesel will soon depart for the land of the free, albeit with a few days’ delay.
As usual around the time of peace talks, Moscow also appears more amenable to proposals, saying Ukraine needs to be at the table, with Putin’s aide adding that the Russian leader is open to trilateral talks. Let’s just hope they won’t demand Zelensky come to Moscow again.
After yesterday’s talks, US intelligence sharing has reportedly been restored, though the status of the Starshield service remains less clear, with Rubio now pointing fingers at Musk as being responsible. And despite the reversal, Trump’s reported personal dislike of Zelensky still casts doubt on how long the shaky ties will last.
