On 09/26, at 3pm, at the Social Culture Center, on Torres Homem street 790, we will be holding an activity about the right to legal, safe, and free abortion and the importance of its decriminalization. By doing so, we want to strengthen this issue, which is very important to us.
The debate on abortion in Brazil is currently being subjected to a legislative offensive by the right-wing. There are several attempts to backtrack, among the main proposals are the PEC 164/2012, the PL 1904/2024, the PL 2524/2024, the PL 1301/2025, the PL 4167/2023, and more recent initiatives, such as the PL 3180/2026. Although they have different proposals, these proposals converge in some ways: expanding the legal protection of the fetus from conception, placing the rights attributed to the fetus above autonomy and the rights of people with a uterus; establishing gestational limits that do not exist today for abortion allowed by law, an absurd measure when applied to victims of sexual violence who face difficulties in identifying pregnancy or getting care; increasing penalties, turning public health and reproductive rights issues into matters increasingly subject to criminal logic; and creating new barriers for women, girls, or even people with a uterus in general who seek care, making it difficult for those who are already in extreme vulnerability to access it.In other words, instead of guaranteeing autonomy, health, and protection, Congress has been accumulating mechanisms of punishment and control over our bodies. Together, these proposals represent an attempt to shift the debate from the expansion of reproductive rights to the restriction of those that already exist, even threatening the hypotheses currently in place for cases of rape, risk to the lives of pregnant women, and anencephaly.
